Problem finishing the game

Windows Vista, CivIII Gold Edition. All three times I've played a game all the way to its finish, I hit the "X" button at the bottom of the screen after the various civ leaders spout phrases at me, and my screen goes completely white. After hitting any key, it tells me the game is not responding, 2 options are wait for it to respond or quit. Waiting doesn't seem to make any difference. Is there a software problem like a glitch or something? Or should I be chalking this one up simply to Vista being a pain in the ass?
Also I reloaded from the turn before, and re-did the ending, this time using Esc. instead of hitting the onscreen button, and it seems to work, but if I forget it seems to crash on me. Anyone else have this happen to them?

I get that in Win7. It seems that epic maps go through a vid that it does not like. If you play on a custom map, you do not go to all those screens and it finishes just fine. It does not matter, since the game is over anyway.

I have the same problem. If you just want the score to show in your HOF - or if you are trying to save the 'next' turn for a GOTM submission, then just "x" out of the windows as fast as possible. The only thing you can run is the replay. Keep "x" out of everything and you will get to the 'I'm done' or 'let me play a few more'.

The trick is, don't wait for the computer to load anything or go through any graphics. Don't click on any leader heads and don't wait for the warrior at the end to hit the meter and give you an ego boost.

That works for me. It isn't really a fix, but I don't really care to look at any of that anyway. All I care about is the replay and final score. Note that the warrior will give you a rating, but you will skip the animation.
