Problem with Custom Maps

I’ve tried loading the custom maps I DL’ed from the net, but there seems to be a problem...

Whenever I try to play with one, the research menu doesn’t work. I can’t change what I am researching. This is more than slightly annoying. Is there a workaround for this?

I’ve noticed that a few people have complained about this problem when changing the rules, but I haven’t done that...
