Problems when installing Expansion Packs

I have Civ IV (with patch 174) installed on Windows 7. It runs fine with no problems. I purchased the download versions of Warlords and Beyond the Sword add-ons from ebgames.

When I attempt to install Warlords, I get the error "A compatible version of Civilization IV has not been found".

When I attempt to install Beyond the Sword, the setup crashes just after you click the first "Next" button.

Any ideas?

what civ4 version do you have? is it also from ebgames or a cd version or a different online vendor?

The Civ4 version I have is the CD version. After searching some more online yesterday, I found some other references to problems when mixing CD versions and download versions.

My next step is to get the download version of Civ4.

I'll post here again if that works. (Assuming I can find a download version fairly cheep)

if you do that make sure to get a digital version from the same vendor as the expansions - not all digital versions are mutually compatible, the digital distribution of this game has been seriously botched.

Ok, so, here's what I've done:

1. Installed Download version of Civ4 from ebgames/gamespot.
1a. this would not let me use the "Update" feature in the game. It gave me an error about no compatible versions installed.

2. Installed Warlords XPack. Install succeeded. Did not start game yet, nor did I update.

3. Installed BtS XPack. Install succeeded.
3a. Received error when using the "Update" feature. Downloaded 3.19 patch from the link on this forum.

4. Patch will not install. It goes thru the motions with all the intro screens, but as soon as you click install, the window goes away and then nothing. no errors, no warnings...nothing. (checking Task Manager, the process ends after about 1 min after clicking Install)

But...the game runs. Sure would like to patch it, though. Not sure if the problem is with the download versions or with Windows 7. Have tried the "Run as Administrator", but same problem.

You can not use the patches either from the in-game up date or downloaded from this site or elsewhere with downloaded versions of the games. You must get the patches from the vendor you downloaded the game from. As you have installed the expansions both basic Civ 4 and Warlords will be fully patched, the only patch you may need is the 3.19 patch which in your case you will have to get from ebgames. Before you do, check if it has been supplied already fully patched. Look in the advanced menu then about this build (from memory so may not be exact) when you start the game.

The game is at 3.17. The link on Gamespot for the 3.19 patch is broken and has been for some time, according to the comments on that page.

Guess I'm SOL for the patch.
