Problems with CivIV Locking up Computer

I had no trouble installing Civ IV and I had no trouble getting to the first screen. I've been having trouble with civ locking up my computer once I start a game or when i'm playing. About 5 out of 10 times I try to start a new game or continue on from a previous game the computer will freeze up while loading. If it loads OK, then I may have about 1/2 to 1 hour of game play if I'm lucky before the computer freezes up again. I loaded the 1.52 patch with no apparent success and I've updated all my video drives. I currently have a 2 year old HP computer meeting all the minimum requirements.

I've look all over for a solution but can't seem to find one. Please Help!

Assuming you are running windows xp (since you didn't say anything about it), it's very rare that something can cause a hard lock like that from which you cannot recover, although i have seen it happen before. Given what i've heard on this forum, though, it's probably not the game's fault, and the blame can more likely be placed on your own computer. The problem could range from bad drivers to inadequate cooling to damaged hardware.
