Problems with LAN multiplayer

I have a copy of the original civ3 and the original PTW addon.

Today I bought a box set that has civ4 and civ3 complete (includes PTW and Conquests).

I'm trying to get a LAN game going using my two copies of civ3/PTW and civ3 complete but I can't get the two computers to see each other but If i switch to an internet game i can see other games.

is this a problem with different versions of the game not working with each other?
