Problems with Playing/Patching

Ok, I'm running windows Vista 64-bit, and have the Direct2Drive version of Civ 4. And also the 1.74 patch which I did download from Direct2Drive.

Here's the problem:
After installation when I try to play Civ 4 I get the message
"This application has failed to start because MSVCR71.dll was not found. Re-Installing the application may fix this problem"

I've tried reinstalling and redownloading but nothing works. So the game will not play at all. So that's one problem, but the next is that when I try to install the 1.74 patch once i click the setup.exe the installshield starts but all it will allow me to do is uninstall the entire game instead of patching. Any help would be appreciated.

did you install the game and patch with administrator rights?

yes there's only 1 user on my computer, and i also tried the right click + run as administrator, everything is still the same.

this does not mean that you installed with admin rights - in Vista you need to actively allow a program to use admin rights - and Civ4 is not asking for those. Try reinstalling the game and patch and make sure to right click on the installers and chose run as admin.

well i tried that with the patch.exe and didnt change anything, but i'll uninstall and try it with the game itself.
