Promotion Cap?

Is there a limit to how many promotions you can give to an individual unit? I've been playing a game with a prolonged war. The AI kept hammering one of my cities, (that was nicely placed on a hill with a river around it and had full wall/castle upgrades). At first the promotions were coming like crazy, but it seemed to have maxed out at 4 per unit. Is there a solid 4 promotion per unit cap or is the experience needed just so much that a 5th promotion is impossibly difficult to get?

It should be easy to check if you have a level 5 unit, just hold your mouse over it and it'll say how much exp it has and how much it needs for next level. I know you get promotions at 2/5/10/17 exp. Not sure if that's max or not.

5 Promotions is possible...

I know cause of the Promotion Combat 5.
If it is capped there I don't know. And if it is capped it would be interesting if you can get 7 Promotions with Aggressive and Redcross or if those 2 free promotions are part of the cap.

I don't think there is a cap, but the more promotions a unit already has, the more experience you need for an aditional promotion. I had a calvary with level 6 which needed 26 exp and level 7 needed 37 points. It is possible, but very unlikely to get past level 5.

Other limiting factors for the promotions are
1. the stronger a winning unit is compared to the loser, the less experience it will get.
2. defenders generally get less experience than attackers.

Ahh ok. That makes sense. I guess I just have to be more aggressive then. I'm still getting a handle on the new war strategies. I'm typically a builder, but I want to kick Alexanders a$$. That guy's been breathing down my neck for over 1000 years!

Units also lose experience (but keep thier level) when you upgrade. So it quickly becomes very difficult to get a unit past level 5.

What do mean they lose experience?
I dont think this is accurate. It justs takes more and more additional points to move up a level. Also a highly experienced unit will likely be the top defender/attacker, so it will be more likely to absorb attacks then worse units.

They lose the experience point total. So, they have all the promotions you gave them still in effect, but the XP point total gets reduced to 10.

In theory, the number of promotions a unit can have is unlimited. In practice, however, the logrythmic progression of the xp needed for promotion makes 5 or 6 extrememly unlikely, and the practical limit. Keep this in mind when you are promoting your unit.

I am playing a game now where I have a two lvl 7 Cavalry, that were upgraded from lvl7 Knights. If I remeber right, 50 was the magic number for the lvl7 upgrade. If you are upgrading, make sure to get Commando at some point for your units, it helps out immensly for scouting and sneak attack purposes.

The thing about exp dropping to 10 is right, so if your unit is about to recieve a promotion, it can be a good idea to get it before you upgrade.

Its not logarithmic. For those who hadn't noticed the pattern:

2 + 3 = 5
5 + 5 = 10
10 + 7 = 17
17 + 9 = 26
26 + 11 = 37
37 + 13 = 50
50 + 15 = 65

etc...

Its a simple arithmetic sequence:

ExperienceRqrd_(n) = ExpereinceRqrd_(n-1) + (2n - 1)
ExperienceRqrd_(1) = 2

I dont know about resetting when upgraded though...

I believe the actual number is HALF from defending as opposed to attacking.
