Proposal to Firaxis

If they accept the idea, will the beta testers get the CD sometime after they get Conquests, separately? I imagine so.

So, did you get my mail and PM TET?

Because all the response I've gotten from you was a irc message, when I was AFK.

Premature to say it will happen for sure but the proposal is being given serious consideration. Details are being discussed and as soon as I get something solid I will post to let all of you know.

Tet, that is fantastic.:D It's really great to ba a part of an online community that is so dynamic to give birth to an idea like this! I wish you success in the negotiations. Also I'd like to thank Firaxis and Atari for just considering it.:goodjob:

Here is an update of the proposal:

Hi guys,

The specific proposal which Teturkhan put together -- funding mod makers full time to create an independently sold CD -- will not happen in the Civ Conquests timeframe, for a variety of financial, legal, and business reasons. The door is definitely open for something like this in the future.

However, the concept of creating a separate CD compilation of some of the best material from fan sites such as this one is still quite alive. Since we simply won't raise the price of Civ Conquests, I'm very interested in putting out such a CD as part of a pre-sell program. As in, pre-order Civ Conquests and get a "Best of the Net" CD full of goodies -- some familiar favorites, and some exclusive (for a time). This accomplishes several things:

1) It rewards loyal fans who were going to buy the game anyway, without requiring anyone to shell out more cash.
2) It gets fresh content into the hands of players that might not normally seek out and download these mods.
3) It brings more people into the community made strong by fan sites such as Apolyton and CivFanatics.
4) Pre-sell programs with quality content makes retailers happy. (Happy retailers = more product promotion in stores = more units sold = more Civ products in the future. Plus, that's my job. )
5) It fills the gap while you're waiting for Civ Conquests to ship.
6) It's a nice litmus test that provides evidence for the viability of future projects like the one Teturkhan proposed.

I have nothing official to announce yet; I am working out some details behind making this a reality. Perhaps I'll start a new thread once I have more info. After all, part of the success of something like this depends on involvement from all of us here to really make a splash.

I thank all of you for your interest and your posts, especially Teturkhan for getting the ball rolling on this in the first place. I'm looking forward to making this come together.

Best,
Jeff Foley

Well, my Cultural Diversity mod is almost done except for Civilopedia Entries, so I will get crackin on that.

BTW, Will we be able to put the AoE units in this CD? I know it was not possible to include them with mods on the PTW CD. If it isnt possible, my mod will have to come with a txt file pointing to the AoE patch like DyP did . . .

GIDustin

Probably not GIDustin, copyright issues would be involved. A lot of scenarios were pulled from the PtW CD for that reason, having units or artwork from other games as part of the scenario/mod.

Too bad, Tet. At least there's still hope. . .

Hey, it's a great idea, and I hope that Atari ends up running with it. Sounds like it's definately moving in that direction.

Thats not the very best news, but it is still good. If a Best of the Net CD was given away with pre-orders, I would definately pre-order.

Personally, I doubted Firaxis/Atari would raise the price of Conquests with this, let alone pay modmakers for such work, from the beginning.

Maybe the CD may not be as professional as it could have been if you were paid, but it is still a massive gain for the Civilization community. If this CD directs buyers to CFC, Poly, and the other communities, that is a gain worth it in my mind.

By the way, what other communities have been contacted about this? CDG, and the teams in the intersite demogame come to mind.

Thinking about something new, what about a Dirigible (airship)! They appeared at 1900s, and could be included before the appearance of Flight! I created "dirigibles" at civ2 after discovering Combustion!

im trying to find out myself.
