OK, so assuming we have all heard about the upcoming trade route's in the new expansion, I had an Idea that could spice up the concept of trade caravans.
What if a player/AI can choose to raise protectionism on a trade route, they could earn more gold revenue from another players caravan but loose some of the traded good such as food or production?
If this option where to be implemented, than it could be counter-balanced by AI swapping trade partners to another player with lower protectionism.
A high or low protection rate of another player could then further aggregate or make other happier with you (dependant on whether they have the same policy as you) and act as a cause of war.
In terms of ideology, <protectionism vs "freer" trade> could act as a tenet within fascism/autocracy, freedom/capitalism and order/communism as historically, nations did adapt their trade policies heavily during the cold war. (introducing the iron curtin to civ V)
Before the "battle of ideologies" begin though, it could be just a slider that each civilization has when trading with another civilization or within their own cities.
So, what do you think
