Ptolemy

Ptomely can discover Mathematics. If we build an academy in Arete science will increase from 19.5 to 27.3.

Since Arete has a subdigit in its' tech already, I guess we have a library (+25%:science:) already. If that is so, Settling Ptolemy will yield 7,5 :science:, as opposed to the 7,8 :science: we will win by building an academy. Sure, an academy would help for every :commerce: more the city yields, but we will have to lower the :science: slider if we want to settle new cities, and another multiplier (Hindu Monastery, +10%:science:) will soon be available as well.

Furthermore, a Great Scientist Specialist settled will provide:
+3 :science: with Representation Civic,
+2 :culture: with Sistine Chapel Wonder,
+1 :hammers:?

I recommend settling Ptolemy and building an academy with the next GS.

I think the plan is to use the next GS to build academy in Arkadia. It will be our commerce city so one will be needed there. I agree that short term it makes sense to settle him but in the long term 2 academies will benefit us greater.

I agree with having two academies.

So the advantages of Settling him over using him to build an Academy are:

+2 Culture points (with Sistine Chapel Wonder)
+1 Hammer (possibly?)

And if we switch Factions and choose a representitve Civic, we will get +3 more beakers?

Yeah, pretty much. But an academy gives +4 :culture: immediately (I believe), and it multiplies all our science in that city, so if it grows, the effect will be bigger.

But this is an old thread, I believe the Academy has already been built. (TC last Friday)
