Okay, just bare with me here because this is my first post AND my first map that I'm putting on here.

Anyway, I've based this on Ptolemy's map of the world (Google him if you want, the original map itself is really interesting).

Please comment about it because I need as much help as I can get really. Keep in mind that it is neither historically correct nor completley like the original map that Ptolemy made. I've changed it up a bit to be a bit more fun for Civ III.

If there are any technical issues pleasue let me know because, like I said, this is the first map I'm posting on here.

I'll be updating the map once I get some suggestions in! :scan:

P.S. I'm refering to Ptolemy the Greek cartographer, not the member here on this forum! :crazyeye:

Anywho, glad you liked it! Any suggestions though? I'm really looking to improve it! :D

this'll be an intersting map! you should so a series: misjudged maps of the world across the ages!

I'd love to! If only I had the time.... The map the Chinese created of the world would be interesting....:mischief:

lol, and thanks Stormrage I just thought it up :goodjob:

Anymore comments people? I'd love to bring this out of "BETA"

Where are the comments people?! I need something to work on here! Must...spend...time...somehow....*rocks back and forth in the corner, mumbling*

Pleeeeaaassse! Anything would help! :crazyeye:

I have fun playing so far.
It's somewhat familiar
yet not at all.

Thanks!!

Tr0x, I like the map. It does put a load on my IBook laptop, and runs real, real slow on my son's Dell laptop, but I like it. That totally enclosed ocean in the middle is a real trip. I think that there are a couple of other ancient maps out that there you could have some fun with. If I can find them, would you be interested in making them if I email you them the image in JPEG format? Also, have you ever read any of the Conan series by Robert Howard, with the world of Hyborea?

Thanks for the comments timerover 51!

I'm really glad you liked it, I just sort of made it out of the blue. I'm sorry if it runs slow on your computer...I'm not sure what I could do to help with that other than making the map smaller which I really wouldn't like to do (I'm open to suggestions though!)

Oh, and the ocean is kinda crazy. :crazyeye: That was the one part that got me hooked on the idea of doing this map. It seems somewhat realistic and provides for some great strategy!

That would be awesome if you could find those maps! Anything old is at least interesting to look at, let alone recreate. :scan: If you do find some maps, just personal message me to let me know and I'll send you my email address (unless it's okay to post it on here but most forums don't like that). That goes for anyone too! If you have a pic of some ancient crazy map, let me know and I might just make it! :D

And I haven't read those books nor even heard of them. I'll keep my eye out for them now that you've suggested them. :goodjob:

Thanks a lot for the detailed comment and I'm really glad you like it! For the closest thing to an update for this map, I'm going to post a link up on my first post to show you Ptolemy's actual map, the exact drawing I based my map on.

Tr0x, I took a look at the JPEG of Ptolemy's map, and that is the first time I think that I have seen it in color. I will look for the other ancient maps, and get back to you with them. I suspect that they will all be in black and white, however. To ease the load on player's computers, you might want to keep the maps at somewhere around 180 x 180, or 32,400 grid squares. Anything much higher than that takes a video card with more RAM.

I figured I'd have to reduce the size  Sorry, I'm just a big fan of huge, epic maps (plus I have a top of the line computer to run them! :scan: )

I appologize if there are some issues running it....maybe its time to get a new computer!

Anyway, I remember seeing a map of the world from China's point of view during there conquest of the oceans. If anyone could find it again online I'd love to do it!

"I appologize if there are some issues running it....maybe its time to get a new computer! "

I would love to get a new computer, like a dual processor G5 Mac with a huge video card, but I have yet to convince Commander in Chief, Home Fleet, aka my wife to go along with the idea. Just remember that a lot of your audience for mods does not have a top of the line computer. Although I have no problem running some of the 256 by 256 maps, so it is not consistent.

Hmmm...ok timerover. I guess I'll keep that in mind.

Just for a couple updates on what I'm doing:
- I've started working on this map again, making a few tweaks here and there. I've removed the icecaps to allow for a seamless/neverending desert in the south and tundra in the north similar to the original map
- I've changed the civs. colours to personal choices that I feel best reflect them
- Modified certain traits in civs (balanced Spain out if you havent noticed that they're stacked :mischief: )
-Tweaked the far east to include sort of an "easter egg" bonus. You gotta look closely and tell me what you think it looks like! :mischief:

I'm taking requests and suggestions! Anything that you could say that would help this map out is much appreciated! :D If I don't get any suggestions, be on the lookout for Ptolemy 2.0 very soon!

P.S. Just purchased the National Geographic hard cover book: Mapping the World, An Illustrated History of Cartography. It has hundreds of ancient to modern maps in it that I'm just drooling over! It's giving me some ideas for my next project....

I will take a look at it and get back to you. I know the National Geo book, but had not thought of it. I am taking a look at some of my fantasy atlases for ideas though. Some of the maps there would be interesting to play with. If only I had the time.

Time, Time, my kingdom for more time!!!! With apologies to William Shakespeare.

Tr0x - I love the map, it's quite an inspiration. Does your National Geographic book have details like mountains and rivers detailed? I've been trying to work on an Ancient Greek map myself, but the source I had was black and white and didn't have much more than a coastline. Makes it a bit tricky to place terrain. :crazyeye:

Can I ask if anyone has actually played on this map, and if so does it make for an enjoyable game?

I'm glad you like it Keroro! :goodjob:
Well, I've looked through the book but I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for. Are you looking for an ancient map with what they perceived the terrain to be like?

If this is the case, I'd simply suggest this site where I found my .jpeg up top (this link has a more clear, larger version though which is much easier to see than the link I posted!)
http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgu...ges?q=ptolemy%27s+map&svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&sa=X

Or, simply search for Ptolemy's Map on Google and go to page 1 near the bottom right. :scan:
I'm sorry that I couldn't be any more help but I'll keep a look out for more detailed maps from that era (the book includes mostly maps from the 1500's reprinted from ancient sources and including new discoveries)

I'll post some comments about your map in the appropriate topic :D

Also, I'd like to second Keroro's question: Has anyone actually played my map? I've run through it VERY briefly to test for bugs but other than timerover51, it doesn't look like anyone else has!

I need comments people or you'll be getting a Ptolemy 2.0 that might not be to your liking! :nuke:

Tr0x, if you fancy doing a collaboration when you've updated Ptolomy, maybe we could have a go at the Hyperborean age of Conan. I found a version of the map on wikipedia, and as you'll notice, it has some historical as well as mythological and fantasy elements to it. I think that some people are doing a Conan the Barbarian mod at the moment, so it would be interesting to see if they have got a map yet.

The Conan books are well worth a read by the way. They predate books like Lord of the Rings, and Robert E Howard is generally considered to be the originator of the fantasy genre.

"Sword and Sorcery" maybe, but people like Lord Dunsany predate him by quite a bit for fantasy.

Kudos to both of you for your maps.
