I bought the downloaded version of CivIV from gamestop.com and cannot update with new patches and mods. This having been said, I also cannot play any online games. I have the updates downloaded, but when I install them, I get the error message saying, "you must have a previous version of Civilizations IV installed. I've tried loading the game, minimizing it and running the install, but I get the same error message.

HELP, PLEASE... I really need to prove to myself that I'm not any good. I dominate against the computer, and its getting boring, I'm sure I'll have a huge challenge against real players.

they do not have to be purchased.
and just to save you the searching:

The gamestop web page selling CIV IV at http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?sku=d000016 has a download link for the 1.74 patch. No idea if thats any different than the patch you could download from http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/downloads.htm but I wouldn't jump to the conclusion they sold you a incompatible version of the game.

You might also try manually downloading and installing CIV IV, warlords and BTS patches from the Firaxis web site rather than relying upon the game to do it.

My first suspicion would be some sort of configuration/path issue. Did you buy a different version of CIV IV such as CIV IV Gold?

I suggest you re-install CIV IV, using all of the default settings. If that doesn't help, then I'd temporarily skip over the warlords expansion and try installing beyond the sword. Its more recently released so it might do a better job of dealing with some configuration issues than warlords.
