Still very new to the game...

I read through Sulla's walkthrough and have played a couple of games myself.
There is something that is escaping me...how does one actually do the 100% science throughout an entire game? How does one get income that would go towards maintaince costs (for cities, etc.) and not to science research? I must be missing something obvious, but I am not sure what that is...

(If it matters, I am playing Warlords.)

Wrong forum. This one is for posting strategy articles, not question. You need to post this in the strategy forum.

Once again wrong forum, but I'll answer the question anyways, you don't need 100% science throughout the whole game, in fact, if you are, you need more cities! Unless you have multiple shrines with a ton of income, there's no way you should be at 100% once you found a couple cities. Many very good players routinely drop to 20% science at a barely sustainable rate...

It's possible at the lower difficulty levels to be at a 100% the whole game but you don't expand as fast. I think the general idea to keep your research rate at above 60% for a cottage economy. SE can allow it to go much lower.

Yeah, I don't think that 100% science is a very useful goal to achieve. A large empire with lots of soldiers at 50% science may be making more research than a small empire at 100%, and it is much more powerful in other ways too. But 100% science would allow you to ignore banks and maybe markets and grocers in some cities.

The trick to 100% science would be to reduce maintenance costs and make enough gold without the slider to cover the costs. Few cities, few units, courthouses, forbidden palace, cheap civics, state property, and WLTKD can reduce costs. Shrines, merchant and priest specialists, merchant and priest superspecialists, selling resources, and the spiral minaret will create gold income every turn. Pillaging, invading cities, trading for gold, and great merchant trade missions will give you lump sums of gold that will let you run at 100% science while losing money.

Remember 100% science means nothing when you only have an output which is low like say 10:science: beakers or so.

20% with 20:science: beakers is more powerful :)

Look at those instead of the research %

(i never have games with all my time spent at 100% unless i'm doing OCC)

Well I don't think it's possible to stay in the green at 100% the entire game if you're intending to build more then one city but it is possible to stay 100% for the entire game at a deficit, it just requires you pop some goody huts for gold, beeline to currency and assign Merchants for a GM for MANY MANY Trade Missions for 1000+ gold per GM.

At prince level it is definitely possible to stay in the green at 100% with shrines and commerce multipliers. I have even achieved that with pretty large empires (20+ cities). The whole game is not possible but when you get a city dedicated to get out Great prophets and you do have a religious hydra (like 5 religions or more) then the shrine income can keep you in the green without much problems.

Also getting CoL and swopping to caste system allows you to run merchant specialists in addition to any shrines you might have.

Just because you can do it doesn't mean that you should. Its beakers/turn that counts not research rate.
