Q: Which of the following city sites is the best?

1) I would say that site D is the best site for the long run, as it has 2 special resources, and water for trade. This site lacks shield producing squares so you would need to tansform some terrain to hills

.

2) Site A looks like a good position for starting a multiplayer game as it has lots of shields to get lots of units at the start

.

3) I think that site E is the best for a science city as it more trade than any other site (F has more squares but not as much total trade).

In a single player game I would prefer D because of the obvious two recourses and the river, but I think that F would be very good in a multiplayer game, Whales really rule!!

Eyes you are missing the point of this topic. Thunderfall asked what city would be the best in the long time period. that means 2020AD. Talking about what the specials do in despotism make you looke like an idiot.

Think abo9ut it. In site d you only have buffalo and wheat. whet is useless early on because it is only worth a grassland square. the buffalloloooo is worth a forest square. So really if you start in D you start with no resources in a theoretical sence. So D is actually you worst choice you could ever pick. I think it just goes to show how begginerish some of you are when you choose some of these other ones. Trust me, a whale over anything else is your best pick.

Site D obviously has the most specials (probably another whale or fish). If you transform the buffalo on the river into hills, it turns into coal, and if you mine it and put an airbase on top, with all the city improvements, it gives you:

17 shields
6 trade
3 food.

Obviously the best overall tile in the game!

So in conclusion, site D!

I gotta go with "D" as a city for the test of time. I am partial to the "Panama Canals" that pop up during the game, but it just doesn't have any other attractions.

i would have to agree with eyes...
F...would be my first choice
for a start city and for a science city.
all that water and after you transform the swamps more grassland. add forests under the city .....yeah...good site..
love those whales <IMG SRC="http://forums.civfanatics.com/ubb/biggrin.gif" border=0>
thinking about the other sites:
site D i would have built on the river
not next to it...
and site E i would have built on the silk
not next to it..

Lots to learn from the other answers in here. As capitol OR SSC I would choose D, but I would have built it on the river square one square SW, as Boann suggested. It provides very good trade, with a good balance of production, and few tiles that will have to be transformed in the future (I hate having to transform terrain. It takes too long) I have never played MP, so can't comment on that question. Also, I would have built B one square NW to provide a canal between two apparantly significant bodies of water. Sometimes strategic placement takes precedence over resource tiles.

I would choose site D for all options.
In site D, the city is close to sea (we can build sea units), has a river (gives more trade), a buffalo (to give a production boom to the shielded grassland and plains, withaout to be needed a mine improvement), a weat (to give extra food in the beggining of the game, that's very important and the grassland just compensate this growth) and it's very equilibrates with the more productive terrains (except the swamp).

That's all!!!

Silly little man! D is definitly the best site. We're talking about the city in the long run. Once you switch from despotism, the special resource are profound, and Once you get improvements like supermarket, offshore platform, and sewer system that city will have superb industrial production, lots of food (wheat=six food with supermarket), and lots of trade from the sea and the river. Site D is a great site.

This is a great thread. We need more like this.

On the other hand, it's all a bit academic unless you're playing OCC. Why? Because if you're playing an expansion strategy you have to "accept the rough with the smooth" - in other words making the best use of the available usually means using ALL the available land. You simply make sure you get minimum overlap while still not allowing an enemy to make inroads into your territory and also making sure you catch all special resources. Then it comes down to how to arrange a bunch of cities optimally in a given area - say an island - choosing decent city sites for them all rather than making one super wonderful site. The science city then simply becomes the one which has maximum trade combined with good access to other cities for caravans.

Excellant thread... good responses. I learned something here... I love it ! I would go with about any of them.. compared to what I sometimes get. In a recent MP game, if I would have moved my settler just one square, I would have had access to 3 specials ..silk.. a whale & gold ! RRRR !!

"D" then "E" would have been best, had the cities been shifted onto river.
I guess I'll say "F", though I lament what might have been at other two.

It's In The Way That You Use It

I hate it, but i have to say that F is the best choice.

F is the best starting position, because you will have a lot of science/shields.(there is also a road) Because you have a good science, you will have monarchy/republic early/not late. That will result in quicker growth/more science.

The specials at startingpoint D are useless as long as you are in despotism. I think that these specials won't compensate the disadvandage you have in the beginning of the game.

Well, they're all good (compared to what I usually get) But I'd say 'E' is the best because of its production potential, along with nice food, silk, and some water.
