I just had the strangest game...

The Sid-gods gave me four quests in a single game -- Classic Lit, Master Blacksmith, Best Defence, and Triremes. I hardly seem to ever get even one quest, let alone four. Not only that, but Cyrus got (and completed) Horse Whispering, so that makes at least five quests among the civs.

The dumb thing was that it was a huge map and I only had 7 cities initially because Cyrus and GK blocked me into a jungle-infested corner of the continent. I had to build two crap cities into the last remaining culture holes in the jungle just to get the 9 required for the quests, and I still failed all of them except Triremes. Classic Lit was failed by a couple of dozen turns (I owned the GLib, too ), MasterB by one lousy turn (the 9th forge became whippable on the 151st turn after the quest was given), and I didn't even try at Best Defence.

How often do you all get quests?? What dictates their chances of occurance?

I don't get any. I consider them broken and disabled all of them in my game. I play with 12 civs on a Huge map and I think it's ridiculous if I have to build 13 Coloseums etc. in order to fulfill a quest.

What dictates their chances of occurance?

It's just a random chance.

I'm pretty new to BtS and in 10 games I think I got 3 quests, so they don't seem too frequent to me. On a side note, what happens if you actually complete the quests? What is the reward, and the bonus award if you have the other thing it asks for?

There is a detailed explanation on how to get them all in the strategy forum. There are a bunch of requirements for them to appear. you need to know a certain tech at least and there are some others.

But after that, they are all random.

Don't try to complete quests just because you get them. The master builder and Trireme quests totally suck, and the rest definitely don't warrant settling crap cities just to complete them (though classic lit is ok with TGL and Best Defense ok in certain situations for the diplo bonus). The Colosseum quest is among the best, as it's a free +1 global happy or more importantly a golden age with SoZ. Musket and Knight quests are OK if you have the appropriate wonder, and Horse Whispering in case you'd build a lot of stables anyway. Most of the rest are total crap.

In general, the quests are not worth while striving for unless by chance the task and rewards suit your intentions perfectly. For example, long ago I got the Holy Mountain quest in two games, and in both cases the dratted thing was a peak on an isolated one-tile inaccessible island.

Musket Quest is good anyway. You only need 8 on a standard map and the option that is always available is free Pinch promotion for your muskets, which you can later upgrade to Riflemen.

You're right - not sure what I was thinking. It also often comes at a pristine time when building up for a rifle conquest. Gotta love getting C2&Formation&Pinch rifles right away with AGG Civs when doing this.

I found the quest post (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=236727), question regarding this one:

Quest7:
Best Defense
Prereq: ENGINEERING
Obsolete: RIFLING or RAILROAD or ECONOMICS
Active/Weight: 30/400
Aim:
Build default number of players for this world size castles (7 for standard)
Result:
1.All Melee units gain the City Garrison 1 promotion
2.gain +3 Attitude with all AIs you have met
3.IF you control the Great Wall gain +25 Espionage points for the Great Wall

Are the +25 Espionage per turn or a one off? If it's per turn that's huge, imagine all the mayhem you can cause.

Per turn. So it is a reasonable chunk of EPs to whatever you are already producing around that time (considering you will have access to Castle and most likely Courthouses that produce EPs.)

Or with Janissarries, +25% against everything except siege. Or with the English, promote Musketeers to Rifleman that are 50% stronger than other Riflemen.
