If war erupts and you're looking for alliances, get Military Alliances instead of MPPs. Alliances are available with any civ with whom you have an embassy -- since embassies are available with Writing, military alliances are available very early in the game.

but allainces are only good if your goign to war soon. dotn do it unless you want a war, cause you can guareentee that if they offer one, they wanna fight.

Actually, you can't get an alliance against a civ unless you're already at war -- if the goal is defensive help, sometimes an alliance is the best "defense" even though it is ostensibly offensive. You get attacked; you buy alliances with numerous civs; your attacker is dogpiled. An MPP can drag you into wars you don't want to touch with a ten foot pole (in addition to not being available until Nationalism).

It's a good rule of thumb never to agree to any MPP the AI offers you. If you do, you surrender your freedom of action to the whims of the computer.

MPP's need some adjustment to work. For example, the AI should consider the deterrance power of the pact. In other words, if I'm the most powerful civ in the game, and I have a MPP with civ A, civ B should think twice before attacking civ A. I'd also like to be given the option to follow through with my committment. So if civ B does attack civ A, I can have the option of ignoring the MPP and leaving civ A to its fate. The caveat would be that you take a hit to your reputation, since you've just demonstrated your lack of credibility.

Hmmm... good idea, President Mike. The AI isn't to be trusted in MPP agreements.

I once did, I was playing a pretty good OCC game and the AI offered me a MPP pact. I didn't know then, that the AI is going to war... I got destroyed:(.

OK OK.......silly question.

but i have a MPP with the Zulus, and the Zulus also have a MPP with Japan, I want to go to war with japan, so what will happen? will the zulus go to war with me or japan, or is it a case of who strikes first????

MPP's trigger off of combat, not declaration of war. Declare war on Japan, but don't attack them. When they attack you, the Zulu will side with you. If you attack the Japanese, the Zulu will side with them.

hehe...off to war we go then.

it didnt work!!!!!!! I moved two tanks into Japannesse territory, but didnt attack them, next Japan says i must move, so said no way, then Zulu said MPP is over, they didnt want to extend it, but i traded them some wines to keep it going, next thing i know Zulu's declare war on me......darn! humph....i'll have to go to war on China instead! rude!!!

Actually you have to declare war with Japan, then STAY in your territory and wait for them to attack YOU first(in your territory!). That will trigger the MPP in your favor. If your in Japan's territory when war is declared thats breaking the MPP & you also take a rep hit(considered a sneak attack).

Hope that clears it up!

ok, cheers. i loaded the previous turn from auto save...hehe...and declared war on china instead, they are a lot stronger than the Japanesse though. dragged Zulu's and India in with me. But i need to make peace with China becasue of WW but dont really want to as the other civ's won't be happy!

No they won't. Breaking an MPP before the 20 turns are up is considered a rep breach, so is killing off the civ for some reason. Your better off switching to monarchy & continueing the war(if you're winning that is) & saving your rep.
