Is it possible for an upgrade path to fork and merge? For example, can I make the Horseman have a choice between upgrading either to a Horse-Archer or to a Cataphract, and then both can upgrade to a Knight? If this isn't possible, can I make a group of civs's Horsemen (for example, Persians, Babylonians, and Egyptians) upgrade to the Horse-Archer, and all the others' Horsemen upgrade to the Cataphract, and then both groups upgrade to Knights?

Yes. This can be done. Just follow the upgrade example in the 1.17f bic file. For example:

Horseman -> Knight -> Cavalry (Most Civ)
Horseman ->War Elephant -> Cavalry (India)
Horseman -> Rider -> Cavalry (China)
Horseman -> Samurai -> Cavalry (Japan)

The way to do this in the bic file is as follow:

Horseman->Knight->War Elephant->Rider->Samurai->Cavalry.

Since India cannot build Knight, Horseman will be upgradeable to War Elephant. And since China cannot build both Knight & War Elephant, Horseman is upgradeable to Rider. The same upgrade chain applies to Musketman/Musketeer upgrades.

The bic file? You don't mean the actual Civ-editor, do you? (with tabs for Govt, Units, Terrain, etc)

Yup. You need to use the Civ3edit.exe to open the Civ3mod.bic and set what a unit can be upgrade to. Just make sure you have a backup copy of the original Civ3mod.bic. ;)
