Question about revolution

Does anyone know how long it takes for a non-religious civ to do a revolution? (how long in anarchy?) Does it change depending on something? And if so, what?

How long would it take for a very big(about half the world on a large map) civilization in the middle of the industrial age to do a revolution?

It's completly random. I think its between 2-8 turn, but I'm sure someone will jump in with the correct answer.

its always been 4 for me

It fluctuates, and that 2-8 sounds about right. Just go to your Domestic Advisor screen, and she'll tell you how long 'till it's over.

If I'm not mistaken, it's not completely random. It depends on your civ's size, difficulty level, population (I think), maybe happiness, and some other things that I can't think of. So a tiny civ might have a 2 turn anarchy, while a giant empire might have an 8 turn anarchy. And yes, it can be anywhere between 2 and 8 turns. Also, there's probably some randomness involved.

Boy! I wish search worked. This *has* been discussed before. I believe Firaxis stated that the number of turns was random between 1 and 5, with things like civilization size, happiness, etc. as additional factors, making the final result in the range of 1 - 8. (Yes, a very small, very happy, non-religious civ can have an anarchy of only 1 turn. I've had it happen. :D )

This one got me going, too. I thought it had been answered recently, but couldn't find it in the last couple of months.
I believe it's a fixed number of turns based on difficulty level (1-6) plus a random 0-2. I don't recall happiness/size as part of the formula, but could easily be wrong. Don't think I've had a revolution of <5 turns since I started playing Emporer and I've certainly had revolutions when I was pretty small.

  1. I also remember information about a minimum number of turns plus a random component.
  2. The AIs anarchy turns depend on difficulty. On deity, it is 2 turns at most.
  3. I often had the impression, that lots of happiness reduce the number of anarchy turns, but IIRC no reliable information was posted (yet).
  4. As a side note: anarchy is nothing you just let happen, but you must optimize (micromanage) your cities for it:

No shields or commerce are produced during anarchy. (In fact, they are produced, but eaten by corruption and waste.)

Food is produced. Thus you should micromanage all cities to produce maximum food during anarchy!

You may even delay anarchy for 1 or 2 turns, if this results in overcoming pop limits by finishing several aquaeducts and/or hospitals.
:goodjob:

Well, when someone figures this out, PM me with the info, I'll see it gets into the FAQ. I coulda swore this was in there, but after scouring it I didn't see it. I'll start out with Tao's info, as that's inline with my own.

And Wilbill, it has been answered. . . but longer than a couple of months. :sigh: I hope telefragged irons out the servers soon. We really need the search function back.

Ok, thanx everyone.. i'll just try. I do hope happiness has an impact, cause most of my cities have ALL happy citizens :D

The total length of the anarchy is composed of two separate numbers. The first is a random number between 1 - 5; and the second is between 0 - 3 and depends upon the number of cities in your empire. The combination of the two numbers is the amount of turns in anarchy, meaning a non-religious civ can experience anything from 1 to 8 turns of anarchy at each government switch.

BTW, based on personal play experience, it seems pretty clear to me that the "number of cities" factor is not a fixed number, but rather a variable that moves with either map size or OCN in each given game -- in other words an empire of 15 cities would generate a longer anarchy period for the 0-3 component of the formula on a tiny map than it would on a huge map.

The link to this info is a post by Soren Johnson at Apolyton and can be found here.

I got a 5 turn anarchy with my well over 50 city empire. Got pretty lucky then.

Yes, thanks, Catt. I knew I remembered the 5/3 turn part, just couldn't remember what determined which number.

What's the exact connection between those 0-3 "additional" turns and the number of cities (respectively map size)? If OCN matters, does OCN related stuff count in, such as commercial trait, difficulty level (maybe for ai only?) or eventually an already built FP?

Is government change menue prior to research aim prompt?

Considering I could only afford to research republic at minimum speed (by hiring a scientist), I also want to have this gov in place ASAP.
I mean I want to switch to anarchy w/o actually knowing republic at a certain point of time. I don't want to gamble, so I assume my solely RNG based part of anarchy would be just 1 turn.
How many turns do I add to figure out the turn I change to anarchy?
