For the most part, the new units, resources, and other rule modifications are dormant until a scenario or saved game is loaded which uses the new features. The one exception is if you're on vanilla civ (not PTW) then if I understand it right, the bonus civs (carthage, celts, ottomans, and now minoans?) show up as eligible to be played. (I play PTW so haven't seen this personally)

Yes, I haven't got PTW. I'm playing on 1.29f vanilla. So it's ok to play with the GOTM "mod"?

P.S. Where does the name vanilla come from?

This is not so. You can't play the gotm-added civs. And you can't play against the gotm-civs.

You also must not use the gotm resources files but the plain unmodified CivIII 1.29 version. This is described in the readme of gotm20.

Technically, you need an updated xxxx.bic or xxxx.bix file to let you play other games in the same format as the Gotm games and including the added CIvs and Resources.

After Gotm21 closes, we will release these game setup files so that you can play your own randomly generated games on a these setup criteria.

Wizard, have we seen a game submission from you ?? I do not show you as existing in the database??

Also on teh question of Vanilla Civ, my long term preference is to not use this cutesy label too much because it can confuse some of the less experienced players who may not have their software properly patched to the Civ3v1.29 level. The name evolved in General Discussions and then several people in the now defunct PTW beta pool thought it was a cool way to try and portray that PTW would be something particularly special by using the Vanilla name. For the long term benefit of new players we will do everyone a big flavor by just emphasizing the software version number that can be seen in the lower right corner of the main menu screen.

If you had to deal with 5 or 6 lost sould each week who do not even know what a software patch is or how to determine what version of the software they are playing then you would be a bit more sensitized to this issue.

Sorry, I'll use the correct name in the future. :) Hope that there is never a PTW / Conquests patch number which matches the Civ3v1.29 level...

No, I've not submitted. I tried a GOTM once, (I think it was france or something) But I played so badly then it wasn't worth submitting.:(

Is there a QSC FAQ somewhere? I didn't find any...

Same here. I would like to try it out but rather lost as to how.
A link or some pointer into the right direction would be much appreciated.

The GOTM website doesn't really have all of the features linked together properly. Cracker seems to like to hide things scattered around in nice little cubby-holes so he can see how long it takes people to find everything they need. ;)

Here are a few links to look at:
Quick Start Info Center
Required Stuff for timelines
Scoring (a little out of date) The scoring has been altered a little, so I recommend going to the main GOTM site (first link I posted), and looking at some of the recent QSC results (links on the left of the screen), and pick any 'groupings' of players, to see a breakdown of what each player had and how may points they got for things. You can also download some timelines to get an idea of what is an appropriate timeline, and the different styles of writing a timeline. You no longer get a 25% bonus for a timeline, because it is now required for a QSC submission.

@ Bamspeedy,

Thanks a lot. This is ever so helpful.

And I fully agree, the website can be a bit arkward to navigate.
I remember having seen things there that I could not ever find again later.
But it is still a truly great effort by Cracker, no disrespect intended.
