Question concerning healing units

I checked the Civilopedia, but it contained not enough information to answer my concrete question. BTW, is there any general thread explaining the whole healing issue?

And now my concrete question... Round1, my enemie has a settler and a spearman and wants to settle right there. A stack of barb warriors ist threatening him, but his spearman survives the brawl with the barbs and is promoted to elite, 3 HPs remaining.

Round2, he fortifies his spearman an settles at the same place.

Round3, the spearman has recreated completely. I was quite sure, he would have given back only 1 additional HP back, not 2 of them.

It's an MP (PBEM), may be rules differ a little bit to single player games?

I think it is because the spearman was fortified. Units which are fortified when they are attacked heal more quickly than normal.

I'm quite sure, units won't heal if they're not fortified. Exceptions are upgrades and promotions.

Units in a city heal faster - if they skip their turn they heal (and even faster if there is a barracks). It doesn't have to do with actually being fortified - just no movement.

(also, not in enemy territory until "Battlefield Medicine")

Well, did the settler settle the city? Because if he did, then the spearman would have a city to heal in. Units heal quicker in cities, thus we have a fully healed defender.

Round 2. Fortifying = not moving. Unit will heal 1 hp.
Round 3. Not moving. Will heal 1 hp.

So I repeat my question:

Is it possible to heal 2 hit points from 1 round to the next one without having a city with barracks?

Yes, he did.

Sorry - I thought I was clear enough...
outside a city: recover 1 pt.
inside a city w/o barracks: at least 2pts (more? I don't think, but can't confirm)
inside city w/ barracks: fully healed in 1 turn.

Aardvark's got it. After round 1, they had a leet spear w/3 hp.
After round two, it gets its 4th back. After round 3, it's back to 5.

I can confirm. Unts will always heal 2pts in cities.

Does pillaging count as a move?

When an army pillages and then stays in the same place I think it still heals. I don't know if this is true of regular units.

You have to be fortified if I remember right. Unfortified in a city without a rax, 1hp/turn. Fortified 2hp/turn.

Not in vanilla, anyways.
Fortification has no effect.
I don't know about anything else though.

i'm not so sure about that in Conquests either, but i never really monitored it.

In my experience it seems that with a barracks it won't fully heal certain units. If I remember correctly, it will only heal four points? This would usually heal any unit completely, but with ancient cav and elephants (both have a +1hp in C3C) it wouldn't. I noticed this with my ancient elite cav. Park them with 1 hp left in a barracked town and they only went up to one hit point shy of fully healed...happened twice if I can remember correctly :) I'd have to try it again to know for sure, it was one of my first games and it's rare that I find ivory now :(

That's right, it's a bug. The healing mechanism was designed before the introduction of bonus HP so that's why barracks really only heal 4hp. I have also encountered this bug a few times.
