Question for Firaxis: Win XP video problem

Recently I installed the 1.21 patch of Civ3.

Everything is great except after installation, I noticed my monitor's picture is shaking.

This is happening all the time, not just when I'm playing the game. It started immediately after installing 1.21.

I didn't think at first that it had anything to do with the game until I saw a similar complaint logged in this forum. I checked with a coworker who builds PCs and he said that the patch could indeed have caused this problem.

Anyone else having this problem? I saw at least one other post on this in one of the monster 1.21 threads, but no response from Firaxis. I'd really like an answer and resolution on this, as it is affecting my computer all the time, not just while playing Civ3.

I have XP as well as the 1.21f patch, and I have never heard of that problem. Have you tried downloading the latest drivers for your hardware, or uninstalling Civ3?

Not yet, but I have a new computer (since December)

I haven't tried reinstallling Civ3. Can I uninstall, reinstall and patch directly to 1.21, do you know?

I installed both the latest Monitor and Video card drivers. It hasn't helped at all.
Maybe I'll try to uninstall Civ3 and reinstall with just the 1.21 patch.

I've also completely uninstalled Civ3. It has not helped. My video i still shimmering.

First of all, there is a Civ3 Tech-support forum. Use it.:D

As far as your problem, it can be easily solved by adding the line refresh = (you choose a refresh rate) to your Civ3.ini file. I initially had the same problem with 1.21f and that fixed it.:D BTW did you try changing your video settings in the display properties contol panel? Chances are, Civ3 changed your refresh rate and it stayed that way, and that's why you're noticing the flickering. If you don't know how to do it, right-click on the desktop and choose properties, click the settings tab, then click "advanced," then go to the monitor tab, and you can change your refresh rate.

Sorry, I thought I was in the Civ3 Tech support forum..:crazyeye:

In any case, thanks for letting me know about the refresh rate! I'll try it. Now if only I knew what to set it too.. ;)

EDIT: Just tried the refresh rate.. didnt do anything. Just to be clear: The screen is not flicker ing, ie on and off, it is shaking back and forth.. I doubt this is the refresh rate.
