Question on military upkeep and Vassalage

So, how does the Civ4 system work for your military unit upkeep? From what I can tell, you are allowed X number of units before you start having to pay an upkeep for them of Y cost....well, what are X and Y?

Also, the description of Vassalage, besides giving you the free XP bonus, says you get +Z Free Units...I am guessing this "free units" thing turns the equation in to X # of units + Free units = your cap?

Anyway has anybody figured this out yet? I was just thinking about this and I am not around my home computer ATM nor do I have the manual handy, so I cant check there.

PS: yes, this is usually what I do with my break between classes nowadays, that being studying Civ4 instead of my classes, and concocting new and exciting possible new strategies instead of concocting a way to raise my grades ;)

This might be a fluke, but in all the games I've played of civ4 (noble difficulty) no matter how aggressive I play and how many troops I pump out, vassalage seems to insure I don't pay troop costs. whenever my army increases, the free units vassalage provides increases. of course, like i said, this might be coincidence (might be linked to nation size, as I'm conquering during this time too). Anyhoo, the savings on troop costs more than pays for the high upkeep, and vassalage is a no brainer civic for warmongerers.
