question regarding multi-player

if two people are playing, and they each have different rules, how would things work?

For example, if i play by the regular rules, and my opponent changed the rules so that their, say, tanks have a better offense, what that apply to me too? would i even know? would the multi-play not allow changing of rule to being with?

The person who hosts gets to choose the rules, and the settings. I am one of the only ones able to host among my group of friends that play Civ, so I usually get to choose the settings, which is cool. If you have altered the rules, then it would be under "Civ-Content" for Conquests. PTW I forget where it goes to.
