How do I trade with the Malakim? they don't use roads, and any roads that I build disappear.

they don't have to work for you. you can still trade with them (resources, or establish trade routes i don't know what exactly you mean)

I guess an easy way to see if the desert works for trading is to check if you have trade going on. On that note, how do you know if you are trading with another civ and how do you check the quantitative benefits of doing so?

on scores display is running symbol next to civilization.

in city screen below symbol are running names of the cities - these are your trading partners.

Or, go the Info screen in the trade advisor; it will list your trade income with each civ.
