Questions about the Ancient Greeks

What did the anceint greeks look like? Where they the blond and blue eyes that the movies try to make them? Also in the movies greek women are wearing very little clothing..in a book i read once said that women back then wore alot more then that and hardly left their house. Also homsexuals in anceint greece, i asked my history teacher about that and he nearly had a heart attack! Infact homsexual in history are never even brought up i don't know why. Wasn't it true that men back then were "bisexual" and women were just consider as low as animals?

well, most of the Acient Greeks had dark(black or brown) hair, brown eyes and they weren't very tall(average 1,6m). Greeks saw blond hair and blue eyes as very attractiv because it wasn't common among them and so it was also seen as exotic). The status of women wasn't the best. They weren't seen as animals, but the greet scientists and philosphers thought that they were less valuable and intelligent than men. A perfect body was highly rated in the Greek culture but the women usually wore much more than in movies. Homesexuality was seen as normal in Greece, although (concerning men) it was better to be an activ homosexual than a passiv one. They often used slaves or boys for passiv part, like the Ancient Romans.

Greeks in ancient times looked about the same as Greeks today. They were of moderate height, dark hair, dark eyes, and were white to olive complexion.

As for homosexuality, that was widespread in the ancient world, and Greeks were not unique in this. In antiquity, homosexuality was not seen as taboo. It was just seen as a natural urge that had to be satisfied, however way that worked for a given person. There was no sense that you were committed to having sex with a given gender. You could "switch sides" at any time and it wouldn't amount to anything. Furthermore, sex and love were not seen as synonymous. The reason that this sexuality is hardly mentioned in high school
is because Greek and Roman civilization is seen as the epitome of our modern Western culture, which is a far cry as far as that sex is concerned.

As far as clothes go, there's plenty of websites that show pictures of what women wore. Women were not naked, but they wore what amounted to summer clothes since Mediterranean weather was mild most of the year. They also wore dresses. Pants were not worn by anyone except barbarian tribes, such as Germans.

These Macedonians came from Argos in Southern Greece. They have the characteristic features of Acheaen and Argolis Light Blonde to dirty Blonde and Brown eyes.

Both arguments are valid for and against Greeks but many Greeks were Blonde hair/Green eyed. Also remember Hellenism is the acculturation of non-Greek tribes who are now part of the Greek bloodline. Greeks are Minoan today. Trojans, Lydians, Mysians, Phrygians, Lycians, Thacians, Macedonians, Ionians, Dorians, Mycenaens, Cyprians, Sicilians, Syrians and Egyptians of today all have Greek blood.
Oh my, were these researches conducted by doctor Mengele? By the tone of your post, with bloodlines, and blondes, and blue eyes and I dont know what else, i'd say most certainly they were. Of course I could go and discect the myths of Greek ethnicity one by one, but i wouldnt want to be percieved as destructive, so keep believeing whatever it is.

Alexander the Great came from the blood of Royals that established the Macedonian region. These Macedonians came from Argos in Southern Greece. They have the characteristic features of Acheaen and Argolis Light Blonde to dirty Blonde and Brown eyes. Aegai, Pella, Thessalonica are all capital cities of the Macedonia that Alexander was raised in. The region documented, wrote, traded, and spoke Ancent Greek Linear A and Linear B. I just went to a Greek Folk Festival were the regions of Macedonia, Mykonos and Byzantion-Constantinople were the focus.
I however cant keep quiet when u speak of Macedonia as Greek heritage. If you research the history of Macedonia, especially XIX and XX century, you'll see major government-forced shifts in ethnical groups. Present culture in the Greek part of Macedonia is a synthesis of ethnic Macedonian, Greek, Turkish traditions. Ancient Macedonians connection with Greeks is more disputed than confirmed. The language of which they spoke is not clear at all, and much less the region where they came from.

We had a nice debate, if you remember, couple of months ago. I was the last to answer as I recall. You can continue that discussion, or check out my thread in the History Articles about Macedonians; who are they who were they, and continue the discussion there as well.
