I am plyanig Regent level; conquest victory. We are just now starting to see nuclear powers pop up (working on my first tactinukes, though I suspect France already has at least a small nuclear arsenal).

Now here is my problem;

I have automated my workers as soon as they appeared. Now, it seems those lazy bums aren't doing anything anymore. They are not making mines, any more railroads, or ???. They just hide out in my cities and I have to 're-automate' them just so they pick up the pollution. What's worse, tsome of them wander around and into ennemy territory (there is a piece of land detached from my main territory, I suspect they are trying to cross the ennemy terriotry, which happens to be France, you know, the nuclear power, to get to that teritory).

so how do I get my dumb lazy s***headed workers to smarten up and actually produce some work?

I've actually reduced the number of my workers by getting them to join towns; that at least kept the crossing of the borders to a minimal.

Help!

The Easy Answer, one which you probably don't want to hear, is make them work manually! ;)

The Automate Worker code is about as well-thought-out as the AI's battle strategy. :)

Simple, very simple. Don't automate.

Don't build (many) metros. Don't build (many) factories. That way you won't get much pollution. (That is at least what I think you mean by "nuclear powers")

ETA: Bah, beaten by EMan.

I'm going to say it again, because it bears repeating. Don't automate your workers. The code is just too unreliable, and the workers too unpredictable, for it to be viable.

If you really want to automate, do Shift-Ctrl-I. This keeps them in the city they're working in. It also keeps them from changing current improvements. I would get the few tiles around your city the way you want them, then automate-do-not-change-this-city-only the rest. If you really must automate.

I'm happy to learn that the 'dumb-worker' syndrome is not only my own.

Ya, going manual on the workers is going to be rough.

Is there a version that actaully has good workers? Does Civ IV have 'semi-intelligent, somewhat proficient workers'?

I'll try that control-shift-I thing. I think just being able to keep them in the city will be of help.

Thanks.

Automated workers clog up yout cities. They will irrigate mines, they will mine tiles that cannot have a citizen work them. They will put themselves in danger.

Once you get to the late game, park them in stacks some place you can find them when polution needs to be dealt with or you gain new land or cities needs change.

Understand that that govenors and automated workers, is what the AI uses and it makes them lose.

How many civilizations can play at one time in a single-player game? All 31 civilizations or no? This is with the biggest map too.

Going manual on workers is the best thing you can do to improve your game.

Once I realized I had to learn to do that, I started a new game (probably at Warlord  ) with no intention of winning...just practicing at managing workers. What a surprise it was to me that I actually DID win, and it was the best game I'd had thus far.

Once you get used to doing it, it becomes habit and not nearly so difficult or time-consuming as it appears at first glance. :)

C3C allows 32, but one is barbs. The largest map is 360x3xx, I think it is 360x350.

It's 362 x 362...which is massive, so make sure you have a capable computer. ;) The interturns can get very long...

Yes if you are going to make a map that big, do up the cost factor to around 600. You may even want to change movement for some boats. Otherwise they will take forever to cross.

There are several threads (mostly from 2002-2003) which discuss RCP, Distance Corruption, and the FP/Palace distance corruption exploit. However, each thread seems (to me) to somewhat contradict each other on various points and I am hoping someone can help clarify them for me:

Questions refer to below example.

Example- (Palace and FP are 25+ tiles apart...no overlap in below distances)

Capital Palace w/ cities at the following distances ("c" designates "from 'c'apital"): 2c, 4c, 4c, 4.5c, 5c, 6c, 8c

Forbidden Palace w/ cities at ("f" designates "from 'F'orbidden palace"): 3f, 4f, 4.5f, 6f, 9f

Questions:
1) Can the Capital Palace (in a monarchy gov't) experience lost output (red shields & commerce)? I seem to remember having a metro Capital Palace do so.

2) If so it must have either (or both) a distance value or/and a rank value. Correct?

3) How many different city ranks are around the Capital Palace? Five?

4) What rank is 4f? 6f, 9f?

Your answers will probably let me figure out my confusion. Thanks.

1. In Vanilla there is always some corruption in the Capital, even in Democracy.

2. I am not sure but I believe it is counted as having distance 1 instead of 0, or something.

3. Five. (2c=1 ; 4c, 4c, 4.5c=2 ; 5c=5 ; 6c=6 ; 8c=7)
Distance is rouded down so 4.5c is treated the same as 4c.

4. 4f is rank 2; 6f is rank 6; 9f is rank 8
To get the rank of a city around the FP you count the number of cities which are closer the the Palace than the city is to the Forbidden Palace. (That is actually the reason why the remote palace exploit works)

And it was included in PTW, I think. There's a thread somewhere about adding Austria in. You'd have to take another one out.

I think someone forgot that Barbs count as a civ.

No, Austria's graphics + unit was included in C3C - you have to add it in manually, so if you're interested, search the Creation and Customization forum.

I'm a total newb. You'll have to forgive me for asking really stupid questions.

How could I get a hold of maps that size? I really want to play a game of that size. :3
