One more question quckly because i have to run now...

How do I prevent my cities from going up in smoke with rioting under a Republic or Democrocy when another Civ declares war on me? \

I've seen that Democrocy and Republic are supposed to be 2 of the best governments but if a war brakes out, I've found them to be more damaging then helpful. All my citizens become furious and riot and then I have to turn 3/4 of my citizens into entertainers. Is there an answer for this? I don't like getting bullied by the romans, but I also don't like all my cities shutting down.

What's the cure?
If this is happening to you, then you are doing something wrong. A declaration of war by the AI should make your people MORE happy, not less. Your problem almost certainly is that you get into long inconclusive wars and accumulate war weariness. Then, when the same AI declares war against you, all that old WW comes back to haunt your butt.

Your wars should be short and have a clear objective. When you reach that objective, sue for peace getting some stuff from the AI in the process. If the AI declares on you when you're not ready, kill a few units and get peace when it is ready to talk. It's OK to give up a bit to get out of an unwanted war.

Wage war on your terms. Make the wars short. Then you won't find yourself in this position where all that old WW comes back.

Yup , what Abe was just saying, if your wars go on too long then your cizitens will be unhappy. Nothing is more annoying than that!

You have a "more civs" button, is this the answer you were looking for? :)

But if you don't have vanilla, then just go to the trade advisor and click on the civ. The civs that arn't in the foreign advisor's section should be in the trade advisor section.

btw Mirc, I just meant the button going red or blue before you click on it. Nothing too interesting. Because I just thought it is guarenteed that the AI will not declare if its blue and will declare if its red. But now I know it isn't :).

Unfortunately, this won't work if you can't trade with most of the civ's because there is a limit to the number of "Can't trade with" civ's that this screen will display.

I'm a bit befuddled by this as well, because typically clicking on red text is a declaration of war in the game. For instance, when in the middle of renegotiating peace, if you decide on "Nevermind..." the text turns red and clicking on it automatically brings up the military advisor asking to confirm a declaration of war. I think that the red text that occurs when the AI is making a demand must be a bug. Being able to know when an AI will declare war on you if you refuse a demand would be an exploit.

Now to my question. I've recently discovered the wonder/headache that is CivAssist II. I was looking for a modification that displays the tiles that have been harvested for the one-time forestry shield bonus. The "Shield Forest" function in Civassist performs this function quite well....but... I have a slow machine and I don't like the fact that Civassist eats up all my memory.

So, does anyone know of a program that does the same thing as "Shield Forest" but doesn't use as much memory? Or better yet, do you know of a modification that does the same thing within the game (without an external program)?

Thanks everyone. I have one last quick question. How do you demand a tribute from the AI in Civilization 3 conquests?

Start the diplomacy screen. Select the civ you want to demand from. On their side of the screen, put on the table what you'd like for them to give. Then click on 'Give this to us or else!' or something like that.

They won't always do it tho.

Oh, I thought that was just for show. Because I've never been able to get them to do it! lol.

They usually just make a snide remark at me when I do that.

Which means you're not powerful enough to make them fear you.

Go war with them, take some cities, and then see how much they give you.

RulerOfDaPeople - if you demand too much they will never agree. I can't recall ever getting techs from them, just petty sums of gold. Keep in mind that demanding tribute will give you an attitude hit (e.g. polite to cautious, cautious to annoyed etc). It's better to declare war straight up and beat the living daylights out of them. Later you negotiate for peace with your demands.

Once in a while, Civs will request an exchange of their tech for my tech and every bit of gold in my bank.

Is this just coercion on their part? Their techs aren't that much better and may be below what I have.

They will not accept anything less than all my gold... (i tried half just to see)

so what's up with that?

The AI doesn't trade fairly! They were probably waiting until you had enough gold before making you the offer! :)

(Somewhere at CFC there is probably the calculation of the excess you have to pay, in gold and/or techs, to trade.)

You go to the nogiation table, select what you want from the AI's side, don't offer anything from your side in return, and click "give us this or else" or something of that nature. Unless you're significantly stronger than them, they'll usually turn it down. Some of their rejection scripts are quite funny, actually.

Edit --- Gaaaah, did it again. I really need to remember to read the last page before posting...

How do you know which government the AI has?

I was able to plant a Spy in all 11 civ in the game, but I cannot get one single successful mission against the AI.

I bet they are all in democracy.

Does anyone know the key to move multiple units at one time? I think it was shift something but I forgot...Its a pain to move 50 infantry one at a time manually :(

J for Vanilla. J or X for Conquests/Complete. In Conquests/Comlete, you can do Ctrl-J or Ctrl-X and just move the units that are the same.
