Thanks, I usually try and block off areas if im in the north or southmost area and work towards the pole to make a sturdy defensive base - helps alot if water is around. The problem I usually have is that civs come to explore and try to go Through my territory - which makes me absurdly uneasy.

Thanks Tim ... I would say they makes sense ... also player who cannot see an obstical free route would mean that they cannot initiate trade

I installed The Great War (TGW) AKA WWI on my computer and changed all my text and my graphics and now I cant get back to how it was before. Every time I start a game it says :"The year is 1914... etc..." and all my cities are industrial. I made a backup of my art and it doesn't seem to help and when I try to "Repair" it doesn't help... I don't own the CD either cause I bought Civ III Complete online and downloaded it.

Did you replace the standard game files with the scenario's files? You are supposed to put it in your .../Complete/Scenarios/ folder so that the main game stays unchanged. There isn't a way to revert back unless (not sure if this will work), if you have XP you can use System Restore.

If you bought the game online, you can probably download it again. Your name and other stuff should be stored by the online vendor. At least I hope this is how it works.

I just picked up Civilization 3: Complete and I had a question about something that was really bugging me.

At default Civilization Advances (technologies, science etc) take about 40 or 50 rounds to complete, with no additional tech spending. In basic Civ 3 this figure was more like 20 or 30 rounds. I might be ok with this, but I really have no idea why its the case. Why is this different? What effects the research speed?

Additionally, I was curious if there has been documentation about the Game Limits options in the player setup screen. Is there a list somewhere stating what each of these options does?

In Conquests, the maximum research time was increased from 40 turns to 50 turns. I don't think anything else was changed affecting research. Edit: If you were comparing the original, unpatched version of the game, then some things may have been changed.

What affects research cost?
1) Difficulty level. At Monarch and above, techs become more expensive for the human player.
2) World size. Techs cost more on larger maps.
3) Who you know (within the game) and what techs they have. Suffice it to say, if a rival you know already has a tech, that tech becomes cheaper.

General strategy dicates that you run 100% science early in the game, and only decrease science rate when you are needing income.

Game limits - most of those apply to victory point scoring. The others should be obvious, such as domination limits and cultural victory triggers. If you want to know more, just ask. Or wait for someone else to elaborate.

Welcome to CFC uncle dan! :)

In Regular ("Vanilla" (plain)) Civ3 and Play the World (1st expansion), the maximum # of turns to complete a tech was 40 turns. In Conquests (what you play with Complete), this figure is 50 turns. This was increased to reduce the chances of a human going at minimum research and getting a monopoly on a tech, and earning lots of gold in the process in addition to the gold they stockpiled while doing minimum research.

About the Game Limits screen, no, there isn't really any documentation. If I find some time I'll try to whip one together.

I recently purchased Civ III Complete, and I'd like to post a screenshot of my first game. What I'd like to know is: What is the max size of pic (in pixels X by Y) can I post so that people don't have to scroll to the right to see the rest of the pic?

Much thanks and respect. :worship:

That's dependant on other users' screen resolution, but it is probably best to resize or crop screenshots down to 800x600 or less. Irfan View is a good, free program that you can use for that.

hey guys! this is my first post... i have been checking out this site for about a week now, since I wanted to get the most out of civ3. I am playing the vanilla version, and tried the 5cc at warlord with the persians, and achieved a 20k cultural victory first try! it was very enjoyable, I learned a lot about trading in this game.
In this game I lucked out pretty well with staring position, and had one city in a large flood plain area, a coastal city (the 20k city) a city with plenty of hills, and another city with 3 cattle! at the end all of my cities were well over 20 pop, the largest was 27. The next time I play 5cc I will try for space race at regent, hopefully it goes as well as this game!

btw, everyone seems to be playing C3C, is it that much better than vanilla? And where do I get it?

Moderator Action: Moved from the 5CC Strategy Thread to this more appropriate location for the question.

when you guys refer to a "sid" game, what do you mean? i looked in the "civ acronyms" section...didn't see "sid" revealed.

Shawntown - You usually work up from chieftan. Chieftan is default , see this below the Civ choices for a game..

Hey people,

I am playing the capture the princess mode and I am beating my opponent. I saw their princess right on the tile of their capital and I razed that city after capturing it. But when I moved my unit to the square that the princess was, I don't receive an option that says "take the princess" or "capture the princess". Any help is appreciated ;D

There should be a button on the bottom by the Fortify, Goto, etc. buttons that says "Seize" or "Capture" - press that. The unit that captures him will go from Veteran (for example) to Veteran!!! to let you know he is the one with the Princess to take to you capital.

But the problem is - I don't see that button anywhere!?
