Shields are not like a barrier, they are just a means to build things. A tank requires you to spend or aquire 100 shields to built it. A worker 10 and so on.

So if you want to make a temple and it cost 60 shields for your civ, you need to add them to the "box" till you have the full 60 and then the temple will be completed.

I am ignoring the methods available for those with the proper government to use either gold or pop to build items. They are in fact really only ways to convert pop or gold to shields.

The game is about food and shields mainly. Gold is converted to shields or beakers for research. Food for growth and shields for builds.

So the game requires you to maximize your food and shield production. This is done by improving tile as per the chart. Note that some of the tiles types are not really possible without use of the editor, such sd bonus grassland with a cow.

and the shields are good for? (i presume protecting the city)
I guess this is why "shields" is called "hammers" in Civ4. I think it makes more sense.

When do the people reward you with a palace upgrade? This seems to be a random phenomenon, and I'm not sure if it's related to score, culture, or what? I'm playing a game in which I'd like to see a completed palace - but how do I know when it's finished? I've seen no info on this in my searches of any Civ3 sites.

Also, I had a city view that did not display the Mausoleum of Mausollos in C3C - is this a bug?

Also, when I play a C3C game where I have edited the rules/map, the city view and palace upgrade screen are not available. Why?

Thanks.

Also a welcome to Janitor :wavey:

You receive Palace additions when certain conditions are achieved, such as first to enter the Middle Ages, building an embassy and winning a battle.

Each Palace has 17 components and the last piece you can add is a set of trees on the lawn.

If I ever figure out why my cities celebrate when I am at war I will be happy. I thought maybe it was tied to growth or culture but that is not always true. I think I have a bunch of nuts for citizens sometimes.

Also welcom to Janitor - have lots of fun.

You get a happy boost when the AI declares war on you. This is done to follow what you tend to see through histroy that when a country goes to war the people tend to get behind the leaders at first.

.........And then comes Iraq Weariness.....Err, I mean War Weariness!

So maybe the extra initial happiness boost pushed some of your cities into "We Love The (Whatever) Day"? :)

But in my current game I have been at war for what seems like forever and every now and again a city will celebrate. Ity is sort of half and half unhappy cities from war wearinessthat I have to keep adjusting and extremely happy cities. Maybe it is because every body under the sun is declaring war on me. :p

Independant of any WW a town or city can go into WLTxD. It needs to met the criteria to trigger it. That can happen when you gain a lux, build a happy structure or lose pop.

Yes lose pop through settler or worker builds, as that reduces the size and you may then have enough happy faces to trigger.

Not that it matters to gameplay, but I often add trees early - C3C allows it right after you improve the courtyard area. I usually do one of the background wings last...

I, too, have added trees early......

Yeah; it has nothing to do with gameplay, but the palace & city views are the kind of "extra mile" details that make this game great. I remember when first starting to play Civ3 (probably in Chieftan mode) that I'd get to do even 2 or 3 palace upgrades in one shot. In harder levels, the upgrades seem less frequent. As an experiment, I'm playing a Tiny map Regent level to see if I can catch specific reasons for the palace upgrades. At one point, it happened after a culture expansion; at another point, after a battle was won; at another point, it was after I reached an even 700 points in my score. But, it doesn't happen in ALL battles, or ALL culture expansions, or ALL round-number-scores. So, I was just wondering out of curiosity if anyone knew specifically why/when palace upgrades are granted?

Thanks for indulging my curiosity so I better understand this great game.

What means Sentry?

I don't really care, but how can I rename my units?

Another stupid question. Not connected with Civ3 at all, but about this forum. What means (when you look at someone's profile) "Refferals:"?

Your unit will be immobilized until an enemy comes in range.

Select the unit and press shift+n. You can also check "show advanced worker action buttons" or something like this in the preferences and use the button.

Refferals count the number of new CFCers that you have introduced to the site, afaik. It does not have any effect or benefit that I know of, though.
