@CheeseOnToast: Welcome to CFC [party] :band: :xmastree:

It's hard to generalize but here's my 2 cents worth:
1. Set your science slider to 100% (But make sure you don't go negative with the cash.)
2. Build roads around your cities to generate more commerce. (This means more science :science: :science: )
3. Build Veteran Horsemen (need Barracks) and attack the AI when you have a group of 6+. (Don't build defensive units.....except maybe warriors for MP duty.) Attack the AI.....after a few turns you can get a Peace Deal whereby they will give you some (all) of their technologies for FREE!! If you wipe 'em all out, of course, you won't care about that......You can win at Regent level by Conquest without building more than horsemen!) :)

Cheers Eman - just a few things.

1. My slider is always at 100% science if I can afford it.
2. I like my workers, and I tend to have them on automate although I will intervene sometimes with the road building - I like lot of roads.
3. I've never really considered being aggressive from the off. I tend to concentrate on building up my empire and defending, rather than going all out for an early initiative.
4. It annoys me playing at Regent level - but I've tried playing on more difficult levels and just find it hopelessly frustrating. Everyone else's Civs seem to grow at ten times the rate of mine.

Don't forget that a turn before you discover a tech you can lower the tech slider to get some extra gold. And sometimes (though EMan's advice is good and I could never compare my playing skills with him) you need to lower it as you might need some money spent on happiness.

Thanks Mirc!!!

I think I understand why the city has fallen into civil disorder (more unhappy faces than happy), but was at a loss to figure out why I had more unhappy faces if you know what I mean.

I think I am probably guilty of defending with too many units, but then again I have adopted this tactic as a means of defending against the ever-growing Civs I am in competition with. I really need to find out about growing at a fast pace, so I can keep up with the early leaders - then perhaps I won't need to defend in numbers so much.

P.S. Can anybody tell me how to post a screenshot on here. I will start a new game on Regent and if and when I run into trouble, I will post on here!

The easiest way to post a screenshot is to upload it to imageshack then link it in you post using
[img]-url_of_screenshot-[/img] tags.
You can also attach a save to your post...if you open a thread and post a savegame you will get very specific (and sometimes brutally frank) advice.

To take a screenshot:

Press the PrintScreen button (should be near Scroll Lock, at the top right of your keyboard)
Enter Paint or any other graphics editing program
Click Edit -> Paste or press Ctrl+V
Save (as JPG or PNG)
Upload at a site like ImageShack
Copy the code in the "direct link to image" field
In the reply box, write [IMG]http://addressofyourimage_takenfromImageShack[/IMG]

The screenshot will load here then. :D

Edit: And again, crosspost with Bartleby. :crazyeye:

Actually, you should do this in the last four turns or so. I've gotten extra gold and still keep the turns-per-tech the same by checking earlier than the last turn. Usually it's about 2 turns left, but sometimes it can be sooner.

And I prefer Photobucket myself.

@CheeseOnToast:yumyum: : A few more "generalities" (Viz. There are always exceptions.......and many players on this forum will point them out, if asked!):

1. At Regent level you get 2 content citizens. So, if you build 2 warriors, you now can have a size 4 city without any Civil Disorder. Moving the luxury slider, linking to (or trading for) resources or building an entertainer (temporary quick-fix) will avoid Civil Disorder.

2. I know it can be a PAIN but NEVER, NEVER, NEVER automate workers. The Civ program has NO clue what to do with workers............which is a nice way of saying it is poorly programmed!

3. TRUST your AI opponents. You don't have to defend cities, although having 2 warriors to avoid Civil Disorder is a pretty good tactic. The AI is not going to attack you (generally) in the Ancient Age even if you leave the cities unit-less!!

4. Read up on producing a 4-turn "Settler Factory" or even a 4-turn "Worker Factory".......An efficient way to expand your empire and thus increase your commerce. (Viz. Science.)

5. Re-read item 3..........the AI generally takes a defensive view of the world..............it builds a lot of spearmen. In the Ancient Age, focus on getting to Philosophy first, getting a free Tech which should be used to discover Republic...........switch to Republic............stay in that government for the rest of the game. This government will also get you extra commerce.

6. Play, play, play..........this is how you will learn the most! Develop your OWN style..........there are many ways to beat this game!! ;)

Is there a reason why (most of the time) other Civs are 'annoyed' at me? Quite often I will be meeting another Civ for the first time, yet they are already annoyed at me?!?

I've also tried reading the settler-factory advice, and I'm afraid to say that I just don't get it.

The best way to learn about settler factories is practice. What I do is set up a random everything game, play through the entire ancient age and then start all over again. You'll soon find your getting a better feel for what you can get out of your starting position.

As for the other civs being annoyed at you, dont worry about that. That seems to be their default attitude. You'll get a better feel for that with more experience.

A quick note on trading. If you have something the AI doesn't(tech, luxury, resource), in the negotiation screen, simply ask the AI what he'll give you for it. I think you'll be surprised at what they'll offer.

I have a bit of a problem.

I basically struggle with technology. Even when I'm playing on Regent setting, I find it virtually impossible to keep up with rival Civs in terms of technology. Now this isn't a problem if I had loads of gold to buy the technologies with - but I don't. I'm constantly at sub-100 gold and struggle to keep my gold growing every turn.

I also struggle with civil disorder a lot. I have tried changing Govt types but when I do, it generally makes the situation worse - at least financially wise anyway. Has anybody got any general tips to help these problems???

Cheers guys

I used to have this problem a lot.

MY solution was to be more "friendly" to the AI. that means:

1. Trade Techs with them regularly. this is important but NEVER trade when AI pops up and offers. Even if it seems a good trade wait till your turn to make trade. If you trade a tech, ASSUME AI you sell it to will try to sell it next turn. So once you sell a tech, sell to everyone. They will get it anyway from the first guy you sell to NEXT TURN.

2. Get all embassies ASAP. AI HATES when you don't set up an embassy.

3. Trade for luxuries. Make sure you do not trade a lump sum for a luxury from an enemy cause it's easy for them to take your lump sum and declare war, cutting you off from luxury you paid for, and laugh at you.

4. Connect your cities.

I like to give annoyed AI stuff to make them polite.

Give them death and make yourself happy.
Is it my imagination or have your posts become a lot more succinct?:D Good advice either way.

@CheeseOnToast: others have been far more detailed but without seeing a save it sounds like a lack of roads in your core coupled with too many units. I suggest that you post a save in these forums. Many of the guys around here will be only too happy to look at it and give some additional guidance. Oh yes, let us know if Bamspeedy's articles don't solve your settler factory problem and one of us will try to do something about it.

Hi all, I have just got a copy of Civ III after several years of plaiying CivII. So here is my first newbie question! When does a town become a city and when does a city become a metro? Obviously it is important to know this as walls become ineffective when a town becomes a city. I look forwards to your replies as I could not find the answer to this either in the Civilopedia or in a quick perusal of the FAQs on this site.

A town becomes a city at 7 and a Metropolis at 13
