Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

I have noticed this odd little bit of a box at the edge of my screen. Can anyone suggest what it might be?

Sorry if this is already answered elsewhere but....

I've downloaded a scenario (first world war), unzipped and saved it in the scenarios section as instructed. However, when I then load Civ3 it doesn't appear alongside the purchased scenarios. When I look at the file it is a BIC file whereas all the others are BIQ.

As I say, I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere but a quick answer (even if it's "you cannot be serious but...) would be great.

Thanks in advance.

AFAIK you can stop spies, by exposing them. It cost money though. 1.27F did fix a few things, but not much. It is always a good idea to patch up.

AFAIK the lost always works that way, unless you are at Chief, thenit does nothing.

4 turn is the lowest, but you can change that in your BIQ and I would expect in BIX (PTW). The dialing down is only effective, if you put in more beakers than the cost. This will usualy be the case, but not always. The amount "saved" varies and may be quite small.

If it is quite large, you should have turned down the science at the start. It is like income tax withholding. Some like to let them take a bit extra to get a refund, others think it is better to have the money all along.

Tech pace is a function of several things, map size, tech cost and so on. It should not be possible to get to 4 techs right out of the gate and stay there. Later you can get efficeint enough to do it.

You could raise the cost in the BIX.

Improvements were make in C3C, not sure how well it functions though. Mostly it revolves around the ability to get a game going and keep it form crashing.

Hello vmxa,

What does your "AFAIK, BIX and BIQ" mean?
Thanks for the answers. So there is no password protection for a multiplayer game anywhere? This is really sad.

BIX and BIQ are the scenario files created by the editor. I can't recall off the top of my head which is which. I'm gonna say that bix is PTW and biq is C3C. But it could be the other way around.

Hi, unfortunately I'm back.

I've saved a couple of the scenarios, for example Napoleonic Wars.

in both instances, the file is now visible in Civ-Content (thanks Turner!) but half way through the load each fails with the message "missing entry in "text\pedialcons.txt..." and then different ICON_BLDGs listed. I've checked that the folder is in the conquests\scenario folder and that the BIQ file is not in the folder but "above it" in the conquests\scenario folder itself eg

Scenarios \Napoleonic Wars v1.03.BIQ
Napoleonic Wars v1.03 (file folder)

I'm obviously doing something daft, I just cannot see what yet?

Any more help appreciated!

Andy

BIC = C3
BIX = PTW
BIQ = C3C

AndyC, I have not tried that scenario. I have played a number of completed mods and they tend to have missing this or that. They either put out a patch that corrects it or it was an install issue.

If you are using a Mac, files tend to get put in places that makes finding the required entry fail. I would first go the the creation forum and see if this is a known issue.

Pediacons can be searched using the Find function to see if the specfic entry is there and has no typos. If it is not in the highest level folder, look in the original down load and see if it is there at all. If it is one entry, you probably could copy one and modify it to get past he crash.

Hello -

I am trying to find a way to play Civ 3 PTW over the internet against a human in a way, nobody can cheat. I think the cheating possibility is THE major flaw.
A game can be loaded as a hotseat game and one can have a look in every civ. Awful.

It is possible to play with password protection as an email game though. Now I tried to create a password email game, which I wanted to shift into a turn-based internet game, with the password protection stil working. It was working, but the later player is able to see the starting position of the starting player.

How does the community play over the internet? Any help?

sincerely

Hello -

Did You wonder what the point of guerillias are, despite the fact, that they do not need rescources? When a city is under siege of artillary, they are not going to be hit. So the attacker counts the units in the city with his ari and when he thinks, everything is clear, the guerilla is stil there waiting to surprise him.

I doubt that is correct. I have bombarded many guerilla units in C3C. Units will not come up to defend, if there are other units to use that are at least as good on defense.

IOW a 6/6 unit with 3/3 HP will not come up to defend, before all units with more than 6 def. A unit with 6 def and greater than 6 attack will not come up before one of 6/6 as it is considered more useful on offense.

The only way to knwo you have seen all units is to ping them all as they come up to red. Eventually you will see all the units as they will have more HP and be determined to be the "best" defender.

Well not quite true, if you have armies in the town, but you do not see that in C3C for the AI.

The purpose of the guerilla was to provide a decent attacker and defender that requires no resources. You already have a rifle, but they are defenders, not attacker (except to the AI).

Do foreign workers that you have captured take more time to do something? Seems that my worker takes 2 turns to build road on grass while Byzantine worker I captured in war takes 6 (!)
