Is it possible to upgrade the units in an army? I have an army with knights and would love to replace them with tanks.

No, there isn't. There used to be a bug in Vanilla Civ and PTW, but that was fixed with the latest patches. If you could upgrade them, armies would be way overpowered, even more so than they are now.

No, it's not possible to upgrade units. In various versions you could do it, but it was always a bug and fixed in the latest patches.

The reasoning behind this is to make armies more valueable. Did it work? Could be...but I generally make my first army with whatever best units I have at the time so I can get the Military Academy with that army win. Then later in the game I may build armies to wait for calvary/tanks/MI.

Greetings one and all. Just bought Civ 3 Complete. Long time strategy gamer that had to take a break because I just had my first child (well, technically my wife did most of the work). With the kid, game time is limited now so I can't try out all the maps and mods and all of that. So, if you all wouldn't mind posting the best downloads for me, I would appreciate it :)

Hi welcome and congratutaions to the wife ;)

If you want something different, Master of Myrror will soon be coming out with version2 for a fantasy experience ... or if you want a quick fun b-grade horror flick ... try Escape from Zombie Island 2 ... it is still developing but very playable as is ... also why not try pbem you have a turn every couple days ...

The only way it won't hurt is if you don't have contact with any other civs at the time the deal is broken.... If they don't know you they can't get mad at you.

This isn't quite right... the civ you broke the deal with must be destroyed before they have contact with any other civ and thus cannot tell anyone about it.

And also any civs that know the civ you broke the deal with must be destroyed too (ie, if you're on a continent with three players, and each of you knows the other two, then you must destroy BOTH of the other AI before they get contact with the outside world to protect your reputation). ;)

If you destroy a civ, the only way the other civs "know" about it is if they have actually contacted that civ. If not, you can destroy away. It doesn't matter if it's one attack, or over multiple.

However, if that civ makes contact with another before demise, then it 'tells' on you.

One interesting note... if any civ is at war with the civ you broke a deal with, they will behave as if they don't know the deal was broken (accept per turn payment for lump sum item). They 'remember' once thier war is over or the original civ is destroyed however.

I mean....

1)
Suppose we have say Russia down to 1 town, but we are 2 techs behind and they have 100g left. Both Russia and we know say the English.
We make peace (for 20 turns), get the 2 techs & 100g in the deal.

Then 2 turns later we have our, say knights, ready for the kill. We kill russia in our 1 turn, we break the deal... But Russia gets killed, thus does not get another turn, thus should not be able to contact the English.

2)
Suppose same as above, except English and Rus are at war as well.

1) The English would know, and the English would tell everyone they knew too
2) Exactly the same. They might be pleased about it, but they still wouldn't trust you.

And assuming that the English don't know anyone else, you could kill them off, and have an untarnished reputation with the other civs.

Even if the russians 'didn't have another turn', the English would still know that 1) The Russians were at war with you; and 2) they disappeared. They would put two and two together and get four....

They're very intelligent like that, the English...

Anyway, is it possible to find out what contacts other civs have, before you can trade communications?

Thank you for the answer Whomp, to bad our servers crashed and I didn't read your answer until today

hey guys, quick victory condition question for you.

I was playing my last game on regent to see if I could get a 100k culture victory. I was cruising along pretty well with my culture around 65k. Then around 1700 my game ends and says that I one with a history score lead or something like that. My final score was around 50k. I had never even known this was a victory condition. Is it triggered by a total score or by being a certain number ahead of your rivals (I think I was about 20k of the second). Also, I'm guessing number of cities and amount of culture factors into this a great deal.

So what exactly is this victory condition and what are the specifics of it? Thanks in advance for any info!!

Could it have been "histographic" rather than "history"? A Histographic win is when you run out of turns, at which point the player with the highest score wins. By default this would be 540 turns/2050AD, but this can be changed in mods/scenarios or as part of the setup in C3C.

Its very possible that it was histograph (I don't really remember now) but I know it wasn't 2050. It was very early in the modern era and I believe it said I was on turn 350 (may be wrong about that). I do know that I had a decent tech lead and I had only gotten one or two modern age techs. I played by default rules and didn't purposely change anything. I was very surprised and somewhat disappointed it ended so early.

Remember, on a Tiny Map, the 100K Cultural Victory is actually 60K! ;)
