Hi, sorry if this was asked or answered. They said they eliminated commerce bonus for roads so u wouldnt have 1 in every single tile, but im assuming the movement bonus will still be valid and therefore will some players still have to make road on every tile or has civ4 found a trick to balance this ???????????sorry but 1 more question, if there is no more attack or defense, does that mean theres no defence bonus on cities or hills??

For your first question there is already a discussion in this thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=123451

They will still provide bonuses for combat. So if a unit were to be attacked when its on a hill, it would get the bonus for being on a hill.

Welcome to CFC! :)

I'm guessing Civ 4 has found a way to balance this. But of course no one can really know for sure until the game is released.

Units are given a "strength" and "advantages" IIRC, and if I understand it in the first place at that. The strength is simply how strong a unit is, starting small for early units and ending high for modern units. The advantages are bonuses the units get in certain situations, such as "attacking a city", "defence in city", "defence bonus against horse units" and so forth. I'm not sure if what I said was right though.

Mongoloid Cow, I think what you have posted about bonuses is correct. That as your units fight, they get promotions, and you can tailor your units to be more effective when defending cities, attacking cities, more useful against mounted units, and all that jazz. this should add a lot customization in your armines. Also, IIRC, there is also the benefits of promoting your units for specific terrain types, not sure it it will be movement bonuses, ie faster through jungles, or actual combat bonuses, but i think you are right in what you wrote.
