Free Drones: Everyone has a job, no bums asking me for my spare change. None of these shows about the disgustingly wealthy as everyone gets rich at the same time. I can be assured that whatever my contribution to society is, it will be appreciated and necessary. And finally, manual labor can't be that bad in the year 2110 with Industrial Automation and Industrial Nanorobotics floating around.

Well, I think science is the only thing that can ultimately save humanity. Of course, that won't happen until we finally learn how to move between universes or create new ones. However, science needs direction,as it is a tool, and not an end. If Zakharov decided to get a conscience (He could get one form Yang, I've heard he doesn't use his ;) ), then I'd jump to it. However, as it stands, the only people there I'd trust enough to actually join their faction would be Lal, Deirdre and Roze. Probably Lal, as his agenda contains (Or should contain?) those of the Gaians and Angels.

In the end, however, I'd probably end up in the pod closest to wherever I was standing at the time ;) .

I'd agree with that. It seems like no matter what agenda I go with in Alpha Centauri, they are are evil in their own way. But maybe that is part of the fun of getting to choose your faction's path. Do you seek peace with your neigbors, or crush them and torture eachother in weird floating electromagnetic spheres? I have to say Yang is the only faction I actively seek to destroy. Does he get along with anyone? I tried to play as the Lord's Believers, but they have a hard time with technology and they hate/and are hated by the University. I geuss each faction is an extremist version of a societal philosophy.

Each faction has its most hated enemy that you know can't cope with it.

The Human Hive, the U.N., and the Spartan Federation are a war just waiting to happen.
 
You're more perceptive than a lot of people I know. People who read the blurbs about punishment spheres, the description of Deirdre's hovertank crushing Sparta Command, that disturbing flavor text about Deirdre's mindworms and their psionic powers, that disturbing Matrix-ish flavor text for the Bioenhancement Center, that Saddam-ish flavor text about Zakharov's experiments with genetic plagues, and the rest of the balance of Yang's nihilism, Santiago's militarism, Miriam's fanaticism, and Morgan's mercantilism . . . and then write fan fiction where the beautiful Lady Skye creates a peaceful, friendly left-wing eco-utopia.

And it doesn't get smashed immediately by the various military regimes.

And it never even considers using the Thought Control social engineering option.

What fanfiction and where was I when it was being written? I'd come up with some good stuff for Foreman Dormai.
 
Well, let me think about this.

My highest goal above all else is for me, personally, to live forever. My current goal is to seek such through longevity treatments. So I'd clearly want to go to a faction where the chances of having access to such is very high.

I suppose one huge question burning through my mind is whether the Longevity Vaccine is the only was of curtailing aging or if I could grab one of those gene therapy tanks that the faction leaders and other high-end talents have? If the former, I'd go to whichever faction I think will develop it soon enough. The University, with its high research, might get there first. Or Morgan might. I don't know.

What would really help is telling whether I could move from one faction to another depending on circumstances. Like could I start among the Peacekeepers, then go to whichever faction gets the treatments so I could acquire some?

Well... In case I get stuck in whichever faction I join for longer than 150 years, I'll go with whichever one I think will develop and distribute those treatments while I'm still alive. And likes using Knowledge (and thus won't use Power). And likes other high-end technology. And will NEVER run Fundamentalism. As long as I make sure I'm in whichever base has the lowest chances of drone riots, mind worm attacks, and invasions from other factions. And considering how much I enjoy the internet, I'd want access to a Network Node from day 1. And we all know the ONE faction that starts with those automatically.

In other words, despite the inethical judgements Zakharov is prone to make, I still think things will work best for me if I join the University of Planet.

Though if things get too sour, I may try to go live with the Data Angels, the Peacekeepers, or the Gaians.

In case I change my mind, I think I'll refrain from voting for now.
 
I'm going to go with an unpopular choice, but probably the best one: The Hive.

The Hive is focused on ensuring the survival of humanity. At any cost. This is the sort of situation that would justify ethics and comfort being thrown to the wind. Does the Hive violate human rights charters? Perhaps, but do Mind Worms obey any charters? Does starvation or disease follow charters? Humanity must become like the ant if it is to survive.

The voyage's very purpose was the survival of humanity, not some research expidition as the University seems to believe, not a corporate venture as the Morganites believe. The Spartans are also survivalists, but they are dangerous and unpredictable. The Peacekeepers' charters are useless in space for reasons mentioned above. The Believers and the Gaians are just religious wing-nuts.

As for the XF factions, none of them actually have any sensical philosophies. Take the Data Angels... what... they're going to survive on an alien world through their mad haxxor skills? Give me a break.
 
Also, I'd like to add that I doubt that the Gaians are as utopian as many people here envision them.

I mean come on, they use MIND WORMS as a weapon against fellow humans. According to the in-game quotes, the gaians conquered the Spartans with mind worms and tanks, and all that were left of the Spartan bases were steaming hulks of metal with no survivors. I doubt even the Hive would be so inhumane.
 
Santiago of course. You need to colonize the lands and stabilize the empire with pretty much state control of economy and resources. War is likely to happen in a wilderness, so it is better to be prepared.
 
I'd go with the University while on the Unity - the pursuit of knowledge is more to this CompSci student's taste than any of the other ideologies at that time - but all that fighting for tenure and boring lab work is likely to annoy me, so I'd sneak off and join the Data Angels when they form. :)
 
Well, a lot of them would be more than acceptable.
Definitely not:
- Believers (I'm Unitarian and atheist-no fundamentalism for me, thanks)
- Hive (scary)
- Morgan (I'm a democratic socialist)
- Spartans (2nd amendment good, constantly living in the military bad)
- Consciousness or Cult (I like thinking), or either alien faction (being the only human would suck on so many levels).

So that leaves University, Gaians, Peacekeepers, Angels, Free Drones, and Pirates.

I support all of them ideologically, though not quite to the same extremes.

I'd seriously consider University for cool tech, Gaians for environmentalism (plus a civ full of women who look like Deirdre Sky :goodjob:), Angels for the uber-internet, Drones for the best work benefits ever, and Pirates for sailing and awesomeness.

Final choice:
It's close, but...

Sailing is fun, piracy is fun online and irl, and in the ocean you'd be much safter from attack than any other conquering civ (BIG plus).
Sail by day, watch torrented movies (downloaded instantly via optical networks) by night, and have personal freedoms from a small gov without answering to huge companies. Sounds like a good life to me.

My preferred pods would be with Deidre, Lal, and Zharkov. Really Deidre is the first pick, as I believe Lal's democratic utopia makes more sense as a transition state from how the earth is currently run. Zharkov's pure science state would probably discourage philosophical journeys of the chemical kind.
I've noticed many are not comfortable with Deidre using the natural wildlife(mind worms) as police. Even on earth animals are used to assist or help maintain order in our environs. It makes more sense we have harmony with planet to do so and can call on them as allies or as friends.

The Morganites and the Spartans would be tolerable as one could get lost in hedonism or at least militancy. Plus silly movies would be made about our brave exploits :)

I could never tolerate the fundamentalist jargon of Miriam or her atheist co-conspirator Yang.

The others formed after planet fall, but I'll put my hand in with the IWW wannabes and maybe the Napster wannabes.
 
I voted for Lal. The internationalist views and whatnot attract me. It'd give someone with my personality the most chance of surviving and thriving as well.

Morgan would be all right if his faction ended up as a better version of 19th century America, instead of a worse version of modern America, in which case I'd never even consider joining.

The Data Angels'd also be grand, freedom of information and whatnot is a very attractive prophecy.

The University would be... acceptable, but I'm not so keen on perpetual research so I don't really know what I'd end up doing there.

The Gaians'd also work, so long they end up more of a hippie-type faction, and not eco-terrorists.

The Pirates could work, but aren't my first choice anyways.

None of the other factions really attract me.
 
I'd choose Lal. He may be an ass when I play any of the other factions, but I still like my human rights more than I like my hoverpacks or ecological harmony.
