If you play a civ with an early UU, (Zulu, Aztec) BUILD SETTLERS. You'll be getting a GA early so build many cities. When you have your GA it's nice to have a bunch of cities so you can crank out military units like mad.

This should be under the thread "Post Short tips here"

And anyway, I use Carthage a lot and I dont always use the Numidian to get a golden age. And it is almost pointless to get a golden age in despotism.

Why is almost pointless to get a golden age under a despotic form of government?

Because the shield bonus you get for GA gets cancelled out by the despotism "everything above 2 gets reduced by one" effect

Plus you probably don't have mines on hills yet, things like that (although thats more an "early" issue than a "despotism" issue.

Yes, i have heard that argument before and i used to get quite upset if I had a GA under despotism.

Now I am more at ease. The trick is to mine grassland without shields and irrigate plains for more production. Don't mine shields or hills. Hills are bad for growth too.

The potential of an early GA in expanding quickly by building settlers faster have a vast influence on the game as a whole.

I agree if you are comparing an ancient (but despotic) GA vs a Modern GA.
But in the last GOTM I triggered my GA when about 4-5 turns from Monarchy. I actually had to stay in despotism about 10-12 turns longer than I would have liked, as I would have wasted 1/3 of my GA in anarchy had I switched. So the GA was not well timed. If it had been a few turns later :). That to me was something of a wasted GA.

Some early UU have a long shelf life - Legionaires, Immortals, Hoplites and Mounted warriors. When playing a civ with one of these I make a beeline for either monarchy or republic before going to war.

Other early UU such as the Egyptian War Chariot or the Bab. Bowman I only create a couple to use for exploration or taking on barbarians. I make them run away in any conflict with another civ when I am under despotism and only take them to war when I am ready to trigger my GA.

Only the Aztec Jaguar warrior and the Zulu Impi do I consider worth using in despotism and correct use of these in the early game can destroy or cripple 2 neighbouring civs making a GA under despotism a small price to pay for control of theír lands.

I like the Impi, too. Build 3 to 5 cities really fast then churn out nothing but Impis. If you do it fast enough, most of the neighbors' towns will only be guarded by warriors still, which is decent enough odds considering how fast you can turn out Impis in a GA.

Bonus: One of your neighbors is likely to be the Persians. Hit them hard enough early and you never have to worry about the Immortals. :D

babylonian bowmen and horse are a good attack and can hold even sword. Match for jags and impies and no resource. an underated civ and uu. a favorite when i play multiplayer, as it matches the impi and jag and numidean and comes early enough to impact the game before sword dominates, but by then u should have sword as well. if not, skip iron, build bow and horse.
'Course i did get slaughtered once when for some reason my bowmen really suxed and lost to warriors and the like...i sugggest use them to counter sword and archers and defense. let horse do the rest.
