Though I'm new to the list, I have been playing Civ for a long, long time. It's like I've been developing on my own on another continent far away, and suddenly I find Civfanatics and the map has been revealed....

Since I've been playing the same way for so long, I've started developing my own personal quirks and, frankly, silly amusements that I enjoy doing as an aside to the real game, and I am wondering if anyone else does this sort of thing.

- I try to put a few of my UUs in the capitol as an honor guard, never to be upgraded.

- When playing as the Greeks, I like to turn Sparta into a Hoplite factory and also post an extra few near Thermopylae. You know, because the Spartans were the best west warriors and had the big stand there against the Persians et al

- After my older elites are too out dated to have much success in combat, I like to build a fortress near my capitol and house them there as sort of a "Hall of the Elites" type of thing. A retirement home as it were. Maybe send them into battle against some "one-bar reds" but otherwise they're on pension.

- My latest is the "Naval Museum" where I try to collect one of each type of ship as the game progresses and put them in a safe harbor someplace, you know, for the kids...

These rules aren't hard and fast, sometimes I just get bored and turn all my geezer hoplites into shields or fodder. But I do these things almost always and it actually makes it a little more fun.

Hey I never said I was cool. Just wondering, does anyone else do stuff like this?

there was a thread called "pointless things", many people use "honor guards", personally I like to build "maginot lines" even if the civ on the other side can't threaten me, also I like to name my battle cruisers :)

Sometimes whenever I get a GL, I bring the unit that spawned it to my capital, and then to a safe spot in the middle of nowhere, and just collect the units.

I do this as well, except I actually don't keep them in the capital, but rather dot my landscape with them for "decoration." I just finished a game as India, and had Elephants fortified on several mountain tops simply because it looked "cool."

Same here! I ALWAYS keep the suicide galley that made it to that hidden continent across the ocean. And I use the same rational: a "museum." I thought I was the only dork who did this ;) :D

Edited: And Welcome to CFC Mortodo!

Welcome to CFC!!!

Ya, I find myself doing stuff like that, when I get bored. Usually formations of ships, because there is room at sea. Also, renaming cities, occaisionally units . . .

yeah i like to mess around forming naval battlegroups, renaming ships and such plus all elite units get their own name

-All of my elite* units are saved and renamed.

-I like to put tanks, etc. on the borders of my civ when I'm far ahead and watch the AIs get mad.

-I like to collect ships also!

-When my workers have nothing to do, they build fortresses. Lots of them. My lands are covered with fortresses.

i remember once i tried to cover every coastal tile with MI preventing any landing unless it was done with marines got bored of it REALLY quickly tho shame coz it would have been good to see how the ai would have reacted

I do the honor gaurd thing but if my first warrior everbuilt makes it to a point where he is not needed in an outlying city I retire him in the capital knowing he is around 4000 yrs old. I never did the naval museum, but I like it.

You gotta love those 4,000-year-old warriors. They care naught for the fire-sticks, fancy tanks and flying machines - the new-fangled war machines take all the "personable" aspects out of combat.
I will sometimes retire him on forrested tile that has Game (deer).

Cableguy -- Can you name elite units? How do you do this?

No probs select the unit, hit shift+n and type the new name dont think this is restricted to elite units tho

I don't do honor guards or museums, but I'm always *very* attached to my capital and want it to be the best/biggest/most cultural city... moving/jumping the Palace is an absolute no-no...

Having a few quirks myself...

I never move the capitol, ever.
I look up names of historical leaders of the Civ I am playing and use them on elite* units.
I try to collect one elite of each type of unit with an attack number.

First welcome in the worlds civilization ;).
Its really nice to hear about fun aspects, especially here where most post are around the efficience of gameplay. Things which allow to you to identify yourself with your civ makes a far enjoyable game than only looking at it as a mixure of usefull traits and an a**-kicking UU. And a lot of numbers of course.

I love this "first warrior" idea, and plan on stealing it for my next game!

I do the honour guard thing. The first warrior thing sounds really cool. I will name him Conan!

I do the "first warrior" as well, if he manages to survive the expansion & sight seeing of the early game he gets retired to the capital for a life wine & wenches.
