Quitting an MP game

What is the accepted way to leave an MP game when things didnt go right and you have no chance to win ? Surely nobody expects to play on until your last city is captured.
After all, many of us like to keep one remaining city as a pet ! That would be no fun at all for the player with one city.

Is it OK to quit and let AI take over the tribe during annihilation (something the AI is expert at...lol)?....after telling the other players first of course. I think that just not turning up for the next session is not the right way. What do you do in this situation ?

This question is for MP games with 3 or more players...not duels.
