Just made a rookie error in some coding at work and it made me think of a game I gave up on the other day. (And I fancied a change to the Polls and "AI is naff" threads!)

Playing as Romans on continents (Prince as I like it easy during the week and higher levels at weekends when my brain can handle it!). I'd conquered my home continent and had 4 cities doing nothing but unit production and unit modifier buildings with the rest going into my healthy research budget.

Set sail for the very badly placed Aztec capital and took down their mighty 3 cities lolfest swiftly.

Set my sights on the real target, Russia who had been on my tail for wonders and techs for too long, it was time for them to go down...

As it turns out, they were a little too closely matched and my invasion force took a beating.

Realising that I should have tended to the Greeks and English before taking on the Russian bear, (or simply been better prepared) I started to redirect my forces.

But, it was turn 275ish, I'd been aiming for a sub 350 victory and it would take nearly 15-20 turns to move my army into a position to take the meek Greeks. If I'd have started off with that idea, I'd have crushed them both and been on track to get the win in time.

Annoyed with myself, I quit the game and rerolled.

But did I give up too easily? Should I go back and accept that my personal objective was lost but the game could still be won?

When have you pulled out of a mid/late game because it simply wasn't going the way you wanted it to? And were you just throwing your toys out of the pram? :p

EDIT: - Will post the fail save when I get home for your ridicule and amusement

I think many a civ game has gone unfinished in all the iterations. It's a pity maybe but we should just do what we can to get most fun and satisfaction out of the game. Sometimes that means a midgame reroll. With the new replay function it gives a bit more incentive to finish though.

That sounds like a good game, but I think it's best that you just forget it and move on. What matter's most is that you have fun playing. Probably you would have won anyway, but it would have been tedious for you. I sometimes abandon games that become tedious, such as when I'm far ahead in score and tech.

As promised, the save. It wasn't a particularly well played game as the early victories were more opportunity than design and kinda threw my game plan off.

This save comes from a point where I was conducting a quick test on the time taken to move units into position around Moscow before declaring war. It was during this test that it occured to me that I had made a mistake.

I've quit games that weren't going well and no I don't feel guilty about it. It's my game. It's a game. Should I really be forced to play a particular save if I made a mistake that resulted in me not enjoying that save anymore? I'm pretty sure that a real nation of people wasn't actually counting on my leadership.

I always finish my game unless a bug forces me not too. I don't feel guilty except when I don't finish the AAR for the game.

I'll usually finish any game just for the educational experiance, even if I don't accomplish what I wanted. I follow the tao of Dwarf Fortress: losing is fun!

But that's a matter of personal preference, if you don't get what you want out of a game nothing wrong with moving on.

Only time I quit is when the load times get too much to bear ;/

I enjoy going random on all game settings so there is always an innate disadvantage, so I never quit until I'm fully gone.

This + when I know that I've won & there is no point of continuing the game. Usually happens when going for conquest & 75% enemies are dead. I wish they introduce a new victory where if you own a certain amount of land & pop of total world, you win.

It's up to you, but when you're an old fart like me at the age of 34, life is too short to dick around with a game that is gonna suck. Restart that puppy.
