When I was reading through the civ handbook, I noticed the radar artillery unit and I was suprised.... that's the vehicle I drove while I was in the army!

Here's a real pic:

Cool! I was the Radar half of the Radar Artillery. With that I had to increase the Range and Movement of the Radar Artillery.

I never got around to building one.... <grumble grumble> My games are 'settled' before that.

How are they in actual gameplay?

aye i'd like to know as well. Never actually got to them. ( personally i think there in way to late of the game )

It appears to be modeled after the MLRS military unit. In my experience of MLRS I have found that these are awesome machines.

CIV3 does not show this. In the Game it has the same range as Artillery with a strength of 16, range of 2, rate of fire of 2 and movement of 1. Both Radar and ZOC abilities

As is, I was able to level a size 16 city with 7 Radar Artillery units in a matter of 5 or less turns.

BUT...I had to tinker with it. First off I gave it both land and sea lethal bombard. I increased the Rate of fire to 3 (12 missiles that can all be fired within seconds) gave it a movement of at least 2(these things can keep up with M1-Abrams) increased the range to 4(they have at least twice the range of normal artillery). I'm also considering bumping up the stength, but not sure it really needs it.

Of course with the other artillery units the AI does not use it properly so it is a huge advantage.

you better should get a good health ensurance because a lot of people working with radar and radar vehicles have died because of cancer....sorry - no better news.

alja, there is no radar on the actual system. but thanks for your concern. :crazyeye:

US MLRS units do not have a radar on them. They are usually dispatched with a Radar unit which is most likely where Firaxis came up with the name.

I was the one operating the Radar unit.

No worries though, because the RF coming from our Radar was being transmitted away from our Operation Center which is seperated from the Radar itself. So any RF we did encounter is not much more than you could get from a cell phone.

You seem to be the expert here, but classic artillery is can be quite powerfull, I recall from Discovery Channel. I agree with you on the speed: movement 1 is crappy for a modern age unit. Classic artillery is horse powered for heavens sake!

The only change that I intend to make to the Civ3 instance of the MLRS is to give it the 'Blitz' capability (if possible). This would give it the (realistic) ability to hit more often/targets than artillery.

The only other changes I've considered was to increase the rate of fire to 3 (from 2) and/or increase the range to 3 (from 2).

Has anyone else made these modifications in 1.21f? How well did they work?

I play really long Huge/Pangea games, and haven't had a chance to see what these changes will accomplish yet (but, I'm about to wrap up my current Conquest game).

Yes...but if you were to see the destruction that one MLRS firing 12 missiles can do, you would know why I am tempted to bump up the strength. I just don't think with the other modifications I made, that it needs it. It will be too powerful and since the AI doesn't use it right, it would be unfair to the AI.

(Yes the AI cheats but during the Modern Era when everyone is researching Advance Techs the playing field is already in the favor of the human)

With my modifications this is an awesome unit that can keep up on the modern battlefield. Something you can not go without when fighting a modern war.
