It depends on how many slots you have and the type of RAM. Some RAM types require pairs of equal sized modules, in which case you might have to install the new one in place of the old. Or if all slots are already full you might just end up replacing it.
If you post the ram type, slots, and amount you have it may be possible to say what will happen with various upgrade options.
