Ramesses II., Deity, Pangea, Normal speed

Actaully, Mansa DIDN'T found a religion, only Sal did, but I'm not going to expand in his direction.

Couple of warriors and chop settler for wheat asap I guess. Advantage of closeby AIs is that they'll do part of your fogbusting. :)

Imo chops won't be sufficient. Better grow to size 4 and 2pop whip it...

You should only need about 3 warriors to fogbust the northern areas. Mansa and Sal will take care of the rest. I don't think the GW is needed. Best to save those hammers for settlers and workers.

The issue with the map I see is that I don't know if you can squeeze out 6 cities peacefully given your neighbors close proximity. And if you can't, you have to choose between attacking Mansa's skirms and Protective Sal.

Fortunately, obsolete indicates the map is winnable. Lets hope for copper from BW and go from there.

Good luck Ororo!

Very interesting how in my game Sal didn't go for the marble right away. Looks like you didn't have a chance to grab that resource peacefully there.

Ohh, I'll get to continuing my second session now. Be back later this evening (I hope).

Allright! I'm back as promised. Had quite a bit of trouble in this game with SOMEONE, but things certainly could have been worse so...I'm not going to too much there. Though SOMEONE'S TIMING and TARGETS were somewhat incredible... reminding me of Murphy's Law every time.

But to be honest, despite being a little fun and interesting to play, it was also a little boring and un-eventfull at the same time, so sorry about that.
Spoiler :

I can't even remember what barb problems I had, but I don't think I had too many, getting boxed around early while I grabbed my trusty henge, etc. I had to debate long and hard on settling in place or moving on the river. I decided to settle in place and gamble on my 80% grassland horses.

Of course... I deteured off to get my war charriots and guess where? NO F*CKING HORSES! WTH? I ALWAYS get horses as my mystery grassland tile when I'm egypt. Well.. I knew 20% was too low to get metals on that tile, but... I was so biased from past games I didn't want to adjust to true odds.

And of course.... because I went after Animal Husbandry just to get my horses, I then lost a VERY CLOSE race for the Oracle. ARgggghhh!!!!

I can't remember if I got ToA or not. I think I MAY have lost that one too due to the caos effect of one bad turn-out snowballing out of control into many more cataclismic events.

At least I did grab the marble spot near south, so then I decided the hell with war-chariots, curassiers, and cavlary. I'd just go down the path of least resistance with the marble and ride out a cultural victory for a change (its' been a while).

Unfortunately... I decided to go and get drama BEFORE music for my discounts and trade-baits, only to find out that Mansa ends up beating me to Music for the GA.

Jesus Christ... typical. I think too many immortal games have polluted my mind to play effectively on Deity anymore.

Then it turns out that when going cultural, I had a really tuff time in trying to flip cities because the AI's kept rolling pretty safe rolls.

Eventually, after my 3'rd or 4'th culture painting in the far West, I was just about to flip Mansa's Holy city. (Yes, Holy city you heard me right).... But then the AP came up to hold a vote to give me the city... LOL. It almost feels like I did all that work for nothing!

Well, Mansa defies it the first time, but by the second vote he just said no, and I won the ballot to be awarded the city. Sigh... I was going to flip it in a few turns anyway so it almost felt as a let-down.

I had some mass problems with Ragnar. I would revolt a city, and just before revolting a second time to snatch the city, Ragnar would ALWAYS declare war on the person who owned that city, and just happen to have his stack right next to the city, then move in 50 units to capture it. Arggghhhhh

It just never failed with him, the worst city he could have captured (for both me and him) he'd do it. Well whatever... Eventually I kept getting other cities though I should have done better.

I haven't seen the cultural victory video in a while, and I had even forgot what it looked like. So.... all in a couple nights work.

Turn set 2 (3360 BC - 3000 BC)

A shorter turn set this time since I'm facing a tough decisions.

As far as tech concerned, we have jsut finished BW but haven't invested in anything else yet.

Farm was finished on T21 so I microed the city to work it right away (governer only does it at the beginning of the turn so we would lose 3 :food:).
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0080-1.jpg

Sal has Masonry and will probably wonder whore a lot in this game. We can kiss the Oracle goodbye (he can research Priesthood since he has Poly).

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0081-1.jpg

BW os finished on T25 and we do have copper nearby! In fact we have moved away from it!!!:cry:

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0083-1.jpg

Our warrior is exploring in the south and will probably serve as a garrison in our 2nd city.

Civ4ScreenShot0085-1.jpg

And our capital...it will get its 3rd border pop in 26 turns :(

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0082-1.jpg

So here's the decision... what do I research next? Archery? Pottery? AH? And where do I settle my 2nd city? Wheat and wait for the 3rd border pop or go for Copper and be safe?

Now I regret that I moved 1S...

The save is attached.

giving up on bfc copper looks bad, but given the nature of the land i think you need couple of warriors up north and not worry about south, east and west...

you have more things to worry about... how to actually get some cities :-).

I am surprised that obs didn't show us some war abuse of AI's

is this the case for 500 BC catapults break out?

I am surprised that obs didn't show us some war abuse of AI's
Spoiler :

I didn't need to. I made a couple defense pacts with AI's that were extremely unlikely to be DoWed upon, and that was about it. I WOULD have bribed someone to attack Sal, but since others kept playing that game already I didn't need to bother.

Ororo.. I am somewhat confused. You mean to tell me that you study the demographics screen to figure out stuff, yet at the same time you don't understand basics such as hidden tile resources? Surely you should have known you were abandoning your horses or metal with your southern move.

I know... That was a huge misplay - it will probably cost me a game if I get barb rushed.

Turn set 3 (3000 BC - 2640 BC)

Another short turn set. The idea was to play until we settle our 2nd city.

I discarded the idea of going Archery since it would cost A LOT. AH would have been a huge gambit too since we're not guaranteed horses and there's no pigs/cows to improve. Therefore I decided to tech Pottery.
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0086-1.jpg

We grew to size 3 and I decided to micro our capital to work the grassland mine since I wanted to finish Warrior before starting on Settler.
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0087-1.jpg

Mansa's Skirmisher was doing a great job fogbusting and he even killed the barb archer! (check his health) Thanks Mansa.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0088-1.jpg

On T27, Mansa's borders popped. Djenne culture is going to be annoying...

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0089-1.jpg

I produced my first warrior and decided to queue another one until I grow to size 4. Meanwhile the worker started chopping.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0090-1.jpg

Sal's Holy city popped its borders for the second time (!!!) on T30.
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0091-1.jpg

Our EP spending was worth it. On T30, we can finally see Mansa's research. He's teching Writing, which is excellent since we'll be able to get foreign trade routes very early.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0092-1.jpg

Here we go. We started building our first Settler and it immediately received a chop. Shame we can't get beyond 40 :hammers: as we would be able to whip him out next turn.
Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0093-1.jpg

Mansa settled his third city. Luckily he went towards the other direction (I think).

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0094-1.jpg

And we meet Ragnar on T32 via his exploring Work Boat.

Spoiler :

We finally switch to Slavery (no. 1 case when SPI is being useful) and 2-pop whip the settler.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0096-1.jpg

Next turn, the overflow goes into a Worker.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0098-1.jpg

We find a great city spot to the east of our Cap.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0099.jpg

We move our Worker so that he can immediately start farming the Wheat once the city is settled.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0100-1.jpg

Cap starts regrowing on Warriors.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0101-1.jpg

On T34 Memphis, our second city, is founded.

Spoiler :

And we immediately receive trade routes because of the river.

Spoiler :

The next picture shows that we'll only need 1 road to get those juicy foreign trade routes. Mansa will have Writing in 2 turns.

You founded Memphis in a HORRIBLE spot...

(Bangs head on wall).

Watching this is making my eyes cry... why did you do that and not simply move 1 tile to get both the marble AND the wheat?

You're playing this leader all wrong so far.

What exactly are your plans so far? Because... "I don't see any method... at all.... Sir."

Demos you can check ingame, I'm last in almost every category except for GNP (6th), Life expectancy and Approval rate.

I still don't understand why you keep refering us to the demographics, especially at this point? It is rather obvious on deity you are gong to be last in almost every category, there is nothing really shocking there.

It would be much more better for you to focus on something simple like what tiles to settle on / nearby and forget about the other stuff. If you don't improve the basics now, that other stuff isn't going to help you become a winner very much.

You founded Memphis in a HORRIBLE spot...

(Bangs head on wall).

Right now I need a city that can grow fast, one that can start contributing immediately - that requires having a food resource in its first ring.

My greatest concern iat the moment is expansion and economy and I need strong short-term cities for that. A city 1N would add nothing but 2 floodplains, which are curently unimproved, for a good 20 turns. (Mysticism+Monument+10 turns of waiting). I also think that I will be forced to delay Masonry until I can get it in a trades, which further devalues the importance of Marble. Plus, I can still grab the Marble with a city 3N of Memphis (can work copper as well).

Obsolete, I know that this city comes with a high opportunity cost, but under these circumstances I think I've made the right decision.

Turn set 4 (2640 BC - 2040 BC)

Ok curiosity has won its fight against patience so I had to play another set :D

We start off by researching Pottery. I decided to go AH next in a desperate hope of finding Horse nearby. Plus it will allow us to improve the cow resource once we settle that juicy eastern spot.

Spoiler :

Civ4ScreenShot0108-1.jpg

Mansa researched Writing on T36. We immediately open borders with him for the Diplo bonus and eventual trade network.

Spoiler :

Some city micro. As I've already mentioned, governer assigns those tiles at the beginning of the turn so we would have lost 2:food:1:hammers: in Memphis.

As for capital, I just wanted to produce the warrior at the same turn as we grow to size 4.

Remember the barb warrior? Well, another joined him. However they didn't stand a chance against our warriors fortifies in a forest.

Spoiler :
Civ4ScreenShot0118-1.jpg

Settler in capital receives a chop. This puts him very close to 70/100:hammers: but not quite, so we'll be able to 2-pop whip him with a huuuge overflow.

AH is in, unfortunately no horse to be found.

Next up is Mysticism as we'll need those border pops soon. (This and cheap Libraries is why I love Hatty)

Spoiler :

Settler is whipped. The overflow goes into a Worker and is sufficient to finish it in 1 turn (we already had 20 :hammers: stored from the previous whip)

Grrr, I was hoping for Mansa to take that marble, and teach you a lesson.

Looks like the AI was being a total idiot again, just like Failaxis ordered. Haha.

Mansa is imploding for some reason. He is only at 3 cities whereas everyone else is up to 5!

Very interesting how in my game Sal didn't go for the marble right away. Looks like you didn't have a chance to grab that resource peacefully there.

Ohh, I'll get to continuing my second session now. Be back later this evening (I hope).

He didnt go for it either in my game.

@ororo:

I usually dont care much (or forget) to road to AIs but Ill say that road to mansa was a nice move. I find it difficult to give decent advise since you played much differently then I did.
But I think its rather obvious that the next move should be to scout more land. The cow/wheat city is not properly scouted and the tundras. Its already clear that you dont have much room to expand peacefully.

Dont mind obs hes just giving you a hard time for not building wonders! Not how I wouldve played it but it seems fine. :)

I agree that my scouting is pretty bad.

I guess I'll build a scout next since anything else is very likely to die to a ninja barb archer...

Actually obsolete has a point - it would be a shame not to use our IND trait to its full potential.

EDIT: Just realised I can't build scouts because I don't have Hunting. LOL! How often does that happen? :D
