I started a new game with Gilgamesh yesterday, or should I rephrase as trying to start.
First out of 10 was tundra starts and 2 was desert. I changed the setting to warm.

I still got tundra and desert, but with water around?
After 20 tries I got a start, not good, but still..

It was fractal map and I have played it before with other civs, and good starts.

Not sure what is going on?

Small sample set, I expect.

If you combine these tries with all your other starts, you may have something closer to the percentage chance of getting a start that qualifies as "good" in your eyes. Anytime you fire up a new game, you might hit the start you want faster or sooner slower, trending towards this overall odds over time.

About Fractals in civ 6...

I have never gotten a fractal map that is not a pangea in civ6. Fractal has been my preferred map since civ 4, and I always play it, but I don't know why in civ 6 fractal always gives me a pangea. I could not find any similar complaints anywhere, so I wonder if something is up with my setup or what?

Anyone else seen something like this?

Yes, but it's likely our small sample set. I have the feeling it happens in 90% of my games and i play fractal maps exclusively.
In other words, not to happy with the fractal map generation so far. If anyone knows a mod that gives a lot of snaky continents i would love to hear it.

You know what? Never had the time to put any effort into the fractal script, but maybe I can compare both scripts from civ 5 and civ 6 (civ 5 fractals are a lot of fun and really unpredictable)... both are lua, maybe I can find and code some adjustments to make civ 6 fractals more like civ 5's...?

We'll see.

Oh, and it's not a small sample issue, I checked it using Firetuner and generating fractal after fractal and revealing terrain, only to see that 100% in my multiple experiments were full pangeas or at the best "de facto" pangeas (a huge pangea and one or two very small islands).

Exactly! Civ v fractal maps were/are a lot of fun.
Interesting you actually tested this.

Anyway, if you ever do make adjustments please send me a message!

I think I suspect where the issue might be... I barely remember checking one of the early versions of the fractal script, and I think I noticed that they coded it so it does not generate ocean rifts... will check.

I play fractal in most games and I'm pretty sure I've had a fair number of continents maps. Even when it's Pangaea I feel like it's usually a more interesting serpentine landmass with multiple choke points to the point that I can't even tell it's a Pangaea until late. Often there are large islands mixed in so it makes for good game play IMO. I haven't noticed any poor start bias with Fractal compared to other maps.

How does Shuffle compare? I like random maps but haven't tried that option very much.
