Anyone else noticed if you start a new game it seems to be the same 4 or 5 nations you go all the time?
I`m always starting new games as I `m "trial and erroring" my way through the game.

Yep, it isn`t really random. I tend to get the same nation twice when i choose random for myself, too.

I guess it goes in runs of the same result, kind of like another random number generator I've heard talked about...:D

I tried it once, was disgusted with who I got, and never did it again.

Have you done any experiements to back this statement up? I have only played 3 or 4 games on random and so far I have gotten different races each time. Maybe try it 160 times and tell us what you get. ;)

Yes, a study on the complete "randomness" of the game. Civ3 might not have as much random parts in it as you may think....

Unless I have a specific type of game I want to play, I choose random for all variables - including manually rolling a die for world size and level of difficulty. It has helped expand my skills by forcing me to play using variables I would not normally choose. I also found that I could play competitively at Emperor the first time I tried this totally random experiment. Before, I had primarily played at Chieftain and Warlord. As a natural builder, it has been fun to occasionally play the warmonger. I think I would get bored playing the same civ or style every game.
