I decided to see what happens when you fill all tiles within 3 hexes of your city. It looks pretty neat. Also, it is awesome that they can expand to 4 tiles when this happens. THat would be awesome- focus on one city the entire game, and get all tiles within 5 spaces? Whew!

Really? I didn`t know they expanded farther than 4 spaces away. Can you work the 5th space?

Your city will never stop expanding, but you cannot purchase tiles once they get a certain distance and you cannot work them from the city.

If it's a luxury or strategic resource, you can get it, but it cannot be worked, as mentioned above. I played a whole game with India and only had two cities, but the time the game was over my initial city had expanded at least 7-8 hexes away. In one direction it expanded over water and was starting to grab an island.

You can't work the tiles once you get outside three. I did a one city challenge, and I had probably 5 tiles in one direction, and 8 in the other. I was going for a cultural victory, so I didn't have to buy any of those tiles.
