Archers and crossbowman are ranged units, fire two hexes away.

Then anytime you upgrade them to riflemen, etc, they aren't ranged units anymore. You have to run them right up to the enemy unit and attack.

Excluding siege units there don't seem to be ranged units after crossbowman. (I'm excluding stuff like missiles and bombers).

It seems strange to me that a guy with a bow and arrow can shoot farther than a guy with a musket or rifle.

What am I missing here?

The expansion pack God and Kings.

What happens in the expansion that we are missing here?? You can't just say G&K and expect us to know exactly what you're referring to haha

...and the whole crossbow --> rifleman is my biggest land combat beef with Civ V.
But, i'll live as i usually get artillery BEFORE i upgrade my crossbows and 3 space bombardment is totally cooler than 2 space bombardment ha

The beef is that you are taking a franchise with GIANT DEATH ROBOTS and Mao Zedong's 4000-yr wars way too seriously.

There's been a lot of threads about the ranged unit progression (hell, I just answered one last week about it IIRC), just look around a little in these forums or the G&K forums. Anyway, the new ranged units will probably satisfy you.

Being dismissive and condescending while simultaneously not answering the question isn't exactly stellar forum conduct. Not trying to be rude, but I think people would generally prefer if posts were more constructive than this.

To address the OP, Gods and Kings incudes the Gatling Gunner and Machine Gunner as upgrades from crossbowman. They have equal bombardment and melee strength, get fortification bonuses, and have a bombardment range of 1. So they can only attack adjacent hexes, but they can do it without being attacked back. Personally that seems like a good way of doing things. Along with keeping the line's promotions from going obsolete, it means each turn you can either be fortified OR get your free attack, but you have to choose.

Technically the units are representing not the range of the weapons but how they were used in warfare. Archers were always away from the main enemy firing arrows while rifleman, musketmen, infantry were all shooting at each other and getting fired back upon. Likewise with the new gattling/machine guns these people were used in wars to lay suppressive fire on everyone and were rarely ever fired upon while raining hundreds of bullets.

gatling guns and machine guns should be a cool addition. i wonder how the WWI units will be, along with the new era

Gatling gun and machine gun also have high strenght both when firing and when attacked at, so they'll be pretty deadly! Need to research those tanks asap. :)

i always like a good blitzkrieg :D does anyone know if there will be WWI era tanks? otherwise gatling guns and machine guns could be pretty tough to fight against

Put your machinegun in a fort or Citadel and each turn you can attack and still get a hefty defence bonus. Which would be historically fairly accurate.

One: Thank you for the defense ha
Two: Gatling guns and machine-gunners?!?!
Consider G&K purchased the moment i find it on sale and my wallet is compliant!

Yes, there will be WW1 tanks, WW1 fighters, WW1 Infantry and then the more modernish ww2 tanks, fighters, infantry, later

I heard they were addressing the opposite issue as well with naval ships lacking melee. I mean, I know triremes weren't ranged units at all, but I'm pretty curious how they are gonna handle late units.

Captain "Ramming speed!"
Seaman " Sir, do you really think its wise to ram a ship in a sub?"
Captain " Just follow my orders!"
Seaman "Sorry sir, Can't ram without G&K"
Captain "nooo!!!"

It's on sale for 10% off right now at steam for a total of $26.99.

that should be good, i always wondered why WWI era military units, etc. were omitted from civ 5. i can see why for other games (who wants to play call of duty; sit in a trench all day?) but there's no reason a strategy game wouldn't have it that i can think of.
