This game was started by Nad last time, but the starting position made it impossible for us to get anywhere. I would like to try this again though.

Civilization: England
Difficulty: Demigod
Map: standard, 30% archipelago, random conditions
Barbarians: roaming
Opponents: India, Russia, America, France, Arabia, Spain, Germany (see below).
Aggression: normal
Victory: significantly altered victory conditions for us. See below.

Variant Rules

a) No more than 2 military units per city at any point! Workers and settlers do not count, but all MP units do. We may never have more than 2 units/city total, so if we have 1 city we can only have 2 military units, if we have 10 cities we can have no more than 20 mlitary units, etc. As Sir Humphrey said, our military might is an illusion. Given the other variant conditions, this is going to be some challenge .

Our relations with some of the other civs bear restrictions which we must respect! Even those civs for whom we have no special conditions (Russia, America and India) have an impact on the victory conditions, however, as below.

b) France - oscillating war every 30 turns! As soon as we meet France, we must take note. 30 turns later we must declare war on them! We must then make peace 30 turns later, then declare war in another 30 turns, make peace 30 turns later and so on, until either elimination or the game end.

c) Arabia - our allies (oil supplies!). We may never declare war on Arabia and are encouraged to trade with them as much as possible. If for any reason Arabia should declare war on us we may only fight defensively, to protect/regain our cities. We may not attack Arabian cities (unless they are ours and we are trying to recapture).

d) Spain - as soon as WE reach the middle ages we must declare war on Spain. We can then not make peace with them until WE reach the industrial age!

e) Germany - as soon as WE reach the industrial age we must declare war on Germany. We can then not make peace with them until WE reach the modern age!

How do we win?
Edited: It's now open to the Team which condition will be selected for a win.

I'd be up for this, except I'm off on holiday for two weeks as of Saturday.

lurker's comment: Guess I'll just lurk instead

great MP, I thought nobody is intersted...now we need 3 more players

eldar, I'll keep you in mind

I actually thought if Bugs joining since he wanted a different experience :groucho:

lurker's comment: I would love to play this but the level it far to high. I will definately lurk though. This should be interesting.

lurker's comment: As much as I'd like to play the variant and run with TheRat and MP I simply need some other games to end first. Good luck everyone!

lurker's comment: The victory points system seems unnecessary and complex. Thats what turns me off about this game.

The victory points turn me off too. I see several ways they can be exploited if we tried.

The points won't really matter though. The part I like most is that we can only build 2 units per city...will be building lots of cities.

I took the victory points straight from Nad's game that time but we can cut them out, I am pretty flexible.
So, Vol, if the victory points are gone, would you be a sign up then?

Hmm. Sure. Its otherwise sounds different and fun. Been waiting for a week or so for Bugs or someone else to start some games based on some of the ideas in the brainstorming thread, but it looks like its not going to happen.

And since modern England is not a world-leader in territory, hostility, technology, culture, or diplomacy, I think any victory condition that could be eeked out would be a fitting ending for this role play.

maybe space would seem a little odd considering mondern day English space programme efforts :crazyeye:

Diplomatic seems suitable, but if we can win via other means that would be fine. How about enabling wonder victory condition?

With the focus on historically accurate relationships, an internationally insensitive observer might suggest that we have to let America win the game :)

I'm not totally sure what wonder victory does...I think that when all the Great Wondes have been built, the Civ with the highest score wins. I rather not do that.

Regicide or Mass Regicide would be ok though.

as per Nad's custom, took the 1st roll:

save

played 21 turns (at turn 20 India turned funny)

London is founded on the tip of a southern archipelago after moving settler for better position
went for curragh, border expansion popped us a warrior, thus 2 unit limit reached
at turn 11
changed build for granary for better expansion
in 3300BC pop a hut and get a settler

3250BC found York and start curragh
spot purple color to the north

India will box us in pretty fast, went for a min writing run.
we should try and meet more Civs for trading and maybe once we have MM, settle the Island in the east

3200BC say hello to India, they are up 2 techs, no trades possible
then India makes funny moves and I switch York to warrior
Indian warrior turns away :)

3100BC, turn 18 meet France on the 2nd archipelago in the east
trade pottery, 5gpt and 60g for masonry
trade masonry for CB and 10g to India
trade CB for BW and 45g to France, tech parity now

I've got it.

If any lurkers out there want to move up to demigod level, this would make a good game to do so.

I would love to join in this. Have just started getting comfortable with DemiGod level in my personal games (2 of the last 3 were wins). But the varient should make it fun.

Isn't it fitting that France was met first?

London builds Granary.

Meet the dreaded Germans. Trade them Masonry and Pottery for Warrior Code, The Wheel, and 4 gold.

London builds settler, York builds curragh.

- I suppose we are at our military limit for the moment: 2 cities, with 2 warriors and 2 curraghs, or do sea units count? Maybe we shouldn't count sea/air/artillary units (they don't even count for MP).
- I would build the next town NW of the sugar. It has to be on a hill (for irrigating York), and here it gets the coast. London didn't lose the reserve food when the settler was built. I feel we need another city fast.

welcome pindicator

we met India first, then France

agree with MP for settling, get a fourth city out and try and get MM as soon as possible so we can settle the other archipelago

I don't know whether naval units should count, maybe we keep to MP units, so arty and naval is not counted (england had a huge fleet to support all the colonies, so it would make sense)

still 1 slot open ;)

Got it. I plan to finish by tomorrow afternoon (< 20 hours from now). Also, welcome pindicator.

Like the decision about navy not counting. I don't think artillery or aircraft should be exempt, otherwise we'll just build a ton of those to wage war with. With few units, we should probably make them count. More expensive units like Spearmen might make the most sense with this variant.

Concur with city placement. Doesn't look like we can squeeze much more in before engaging with India, except maybe 3N of York. Not sure what a total of 6 units can accomplish. At most a smash 'n' grab of one Indian city with hopes of quick peace, but I see no reason India would want quick peace, as its certainly stronger.

Longer term, since we can't afford a bunch of MP for happiness, is Republic the way to go? Incense and wines are both very close.

Its clear we're not going after (or can get) the Great Library. Any thoughts (besides lots of great trading) on how we can best keep up the tech pace? Exploit Seafaring, meet everyone, then just broker like mad?

Time for
