Rat 07 - English Role Play

Its clear we're not going after (or can get) the Great Library. Any thoughts (besides lots of great trading) on how we can best keep up the tech pace? Exploit Seafaring, meet everyone, then just broker like mad?
precisely the way to go

Also, any proposed tech path? Spears (BW) and catapults (Math)? Or something more useful in trading, like a min-run on Poly if we trade for Mysticism?

as mentioned before, I would like to go for MM as soon as possible so we can grab more land overseas

Some bad news after loading the game and hitting enter:

Hello, Bangalore. :( So much for those settling plans. Not much room left to settle, thought I would ask the group's thoughts before proceeding.

Options seem to be:
1.) Settle somewhere else in the remaining empty land on our island
2.) Put Settler on boat and go to 2 cows on east island
3.) Don't settle for now, build up military with just 2 cities

India is definitely a superior opponent, so we should be sure of our plan before engaging them.

I'd lean towards option 2, with the basic goal of increasing number of cities so we can have a large enough force to engage with India.

Glad to be aboard :D

I agree with Vol's idea: don't count navy, but count arty and aircraft.

Do we want to go straight for India or do we go straight for Map Making and settle the island to our east? At DG level with 3 cities any research strat seems pretty futile, but attacking India with 6 troops doesn't sound so hot either.

Nice RP ;) It would be best with France but it's a french opinion :D

From the lurker lounge:

With this setting you should build 2 more cities in this island.. One between those 2 incense and one in the chokepoint, just outside border. The thing is you can't irrigate the south (York on hill could have done it, freeing 6 roading worker turn)
Perhaps a city on the hill NW of the settler to bring water, inside city radius of bangalore. AI don't like that...
So, 5 cities, 10 units, bangalore falls?.. MM is too far for waiting more units support.

sorky's assessment is keen. I don't think we should worry about settling a city that can bring irrigation to York right now.

I'd suggest these three cities:
2 SW of York (chokepoint spot outside of borders)
2 NW or York (between incense)
2 N of York (one N of settler's current position)

Then, when Bangalore falls, we place the city 1 SE of Bangalore for irrigation connection.

All good.

(IT) The French are building the Colossus. Indians found Bangalore in an annoying place (see images and discussion above).

Nada.

London: Worker -> Warrior in 4. Need something so that our border towns are not undefended.

Found Nottingham between Incense. Starts Barracks in 40.

It looks like the Germans landmass is vast.

(IT) The Germans are building the Pyramids.

(IT) France has Horseback Riding now. They've put our 5 gpt trade to them to good use. We have to declare in 14.

(5|35) 2350 BC
Exploring with the western curragh, we can see that India has horses.

Even with 121 gold and 5 gold per turn, France is doubtful about trading either Mysticism or Horseback Riding to us. :(

(IT) Nothing.

London: Warrior -> Settler in 6. Second BG mine has come online.

Western Curragh spots shores of another island, so I head that way. Light blue (America?) borders are visible.

Eastern Curragh reaches the northern most point of the German landmass.

We meet America (5 cities, up Iron Working).

India also has Iron Working now. Next turn we get our 5 gpt back from France, so I'll pursue our trading options then.

(IT) Nothing.

(8|38) 2230 BC
Here's the trade situation:
England (us): 138 gold, +11 gpt.
India: Up Iron Working, Down Warrior Code. Has 0 gold.
Germany: Up Iron Working, Down Alphabet. Has 81 gold.
France: Up Mysticism and Horseback Riding. Has 200 gold.
America: Up Iron Working. Has 45 gold.
So here's what I do....

I'd rather not give India anything, and since they have no gold, there's no reason to trade with them.

Germany will give us Iron Working and all their gold for Alphabet, which will help further advancement towards Map Making.
Rat07_2230BC_Germany_Trade.jpg

We have no Iron. There are two Iron on the eastern cow island.

France won't quite go for Iron Working + all our gold (219) for both Mysticism and Horseback Riding. We don't want to do a per turn deal with them, as we have to declare in 10 turns.

But America has spare gold, so I take a loan out from them.
Rat07_2230BC_America_Loan.jpg

Now we're ready to make ourselves the tech leaders.
Rat07_2230BC_France_Deal.jpg

We now have tech parity with France, and have 2 techs up on everyone else. France has all of the gold in the world (450), except one lone gold piece we kept for ourselves. We make +9 gpt. :D

Nottingham is connected. Worker moves north to bring some irrigation to Nottingham, which York can grab one tile of.

!.... The Save ....!

Rat07_2150BC_Status.jpg

Our situation is clear. We have to stay alive until we can settle the other islands, trading for tech parity.

We have to declare on France on turn 48 (1830 BC, 8 turns from now). We can have peace on turn 78 (1050 BC).

We have 3 military units (3 warriors). We can have 3 more (6 total for 3 cities).

ThERat - on deck unless open spot filled
MeteorPunch -
Vol - just played
pindicator - up!

great trading vol :goodjob:

now, of course the situation is anything but nice. And we have to declare on France in 8 turns. I agree with settling space 2, we have no choice. We need to beeline to MM and get settlers over to that other place else we will be toast.

I'm thinking we got the worst starting spot on the whole map.

I'm thinking we got the worst starting spot on the whole map
I think so, too. Last time this game had the same problem...what to do

lurker's comment:
My suggestion is to restart. The variant with the unit limitation means you have to have room to expand. Without that the game isn't going to be much fun. With that start you are playing to survive rather than playing the variant.

Did you start with 60% water?

If we move spot #3 SW one tile we can still drag irrigation through to York. I've just started playing, but I'm going to wait for comments on this before I continue. If we want to keep Vol's dotmap I'll settle #2 as I was originally heading to do.

..or there's restarting too.

Greebley is right...actually this is meant to be a fun game to play out all those variant. The start should be not that terrible though, else where is the fun.

Maybe we should re-roll, pindicator, you could do that and give us a better start.

And Greebley, you should join as member #5 :D

No complaints about re-roll here.

I think "taking your first start" can be a +1 difficulty level adder. Having no land and no food bonuses was a bit harsh.

It got us thinking and strategizing though!
