Also, about "what you're seeing," you've got to keep in mind, it's usually the people who really dislike something who are the most vocal. The ones who like it have little to complain about and are happily playing the game.
There's also a tendency to dramatically over-exaggerate complaints - even by those who enjoy the game. (See also: "Why does everyone hate Civ5.") We point out some flaws and describe some of the reasons were disappointed in Civ5 at release, and we're called haters or trolls, and told to go back to Civ 4 since all we wanted was Civ 4.5, etc. A bunch of nonsense, but the feverish hysterics only serve to create the perception that there's a lot more "hatred" for the game than is actually the case.
For my part, two stars. It's somewhat functional and looks pretty, but it doesn't currently play like an empire-building game; more like a bad tactical wargame with some cities and wonders thrown in for flavor.
