Heh, we had that happen too from time to time, I recall having swords lose attacking archers... just not very frequently. :)

I don't remember all the combat, but I do remember losing two elite samurai attacking a regular immortal on flat land mid-turn my last turn.

I almost lost an elite archer attacking a regular, too, TWICE -- in our first Zulu war. One of 'em died a bit later, but....

And those are both better odds than attacking a fortified spear anywhere with a sword. Yes, it's partly luck but there's a fair chunk of skill to warfare at any time (thank goodness, else I'm not sure I'd be better than a Monarch player).

Something funny's going on in A, though. The Russians have 2 wonders? I'm not convinced they could have pulled it of in either B or C, their lands just sucked too much. Wonder what's different this time around?

I could have looked at their savegame to see, but I figure someone else will save me the trouble, and I'm only idly curious anyway. :)

Didn't Russia build the Pyramids in our game? And Colossus in "b"? They had sucky food, sucky resources, but not too horrible shield production and time to build wonders.

I'd not be at all surprised seeing Russia with two wonders. Heck, their biggest disadvantage wouldn't come until railroads, probably. Although they sucked for gold/science, too. In "b", though, they got onto A/Z island, so something must've been different.

I just worry that they'll never finish.... They're going at a snail's pace.

One wonder at a time I have no problem seeing, since Moscow is on a lake. Two wonders at a time is a bit different, though I don't recall their production situation that well so you may very well be right that they aren't too bad off on that score.

The fact that they waited to build the Great Library until *one* tech away from Education (silly AI, Trix are for kids!) indicates that they may have started it a loooong time ago in some hick town. That I find easier to believe than that they have 2 strong wonder-building cities.

I think the Great Library was a result of cascade in Game A, if I remember correctly
