Real Vassal State Bug

Here's the situation:

-Celts are at war with Washington.
-Washington, getting badly beaten, voluntarily becomes Asoka's vassal (they had close relations, he turns to him for help)
-Asoka accepts, entering the war.
-Washington loses a lot of land, breaks Vassal status with Asoka
-Washington capitulates to the Celts, becoming their vassal.

Everything is fine up until this point. This is where the bugs start happening.

-I noticed an odd anomoly. Washington sends me diplomatic overatures to break my agreement with the Celts (his master!). I ignore it.
-Celts ask me to declare war on Asoka. Since I've fought against Asoka many times, I'm eager to finish the job. I join the war.

*** IMMEDIATELY *** when I do so, Washington enters war status with me, as if he was Asoka's vassal! But he's not, he's the Celt's! So when Washington enters the war, it pulls his real Master state (Celts) into a war with me. I ended up being at war with the very person that asked me to go to war with Asoka!

Has anyone else seen this? I'm thinking something is not being reset right when a civ breaks a vassal agreement with another civ. Maybe it has something to do with Washington capitulating WHILE he was a vassal to Asoka.

you would not happen to have a save from before you are asked to go to war?
I would prolly help a lot in tracking down the issue

I do, thankfully. I had an autosave from before it occurred.

Now, I tried reloading the autosave and simply declaring war on Asoka before Brennus asks me too, but in that situation I just go to war as normal, Washington / Brennus doesn't get pulled into it. This just barely happened, so I haven't re-played to see if he'll ask to go to war yet.

I have tried uploading the save to this forum, but it is 700k, exceeding the 500k file limit size. Is there an alternative site I can make this save file available?

why don't you just .zip the file?

There is an upload file link at the bottom of page (or under the quick links on top of page) that you can use for uploading larger files

Other interesting behavior. Not saying it's a bug, just curious.

I reloaded my save to see if Brennus would ask me to go to war again, but instead several turns later he A) Defeated Asoka, who then became his vassal and B) Asked me for a permanent alliance.

I accepted the Permanent Alliance request, at which point Washington and Asoka immediately broke free. Now, if they capitulated, they should only be able to break the vassalage agreement if they or the master lose half their land, correct? If so, how did they break it when we joined the permanent alliance? Do vassals automatically cancel once the master nation enters a permanent alliance?

I think what happens is that in Brennus' turn, Brennus sends you a request to declare war against Asoka. Then Asoka capitulates. In your turn, you still get Brennus' request, even though their war is already over. When you accept, you end up declaring war against both of them because of their vassal relationship. Thanks for finding it.

Thanks Goodgimp for ponting this out!!!

I just can't believe this bug has gone through playtesting!
I REALLY just can't believe it!!!

It happened to me during my SECOND (!) game of WL.
Did you (Firaxis team) hire monkeys to playtest or didn't you playtest at all,
handing over this chore to us civnuts?
It's such an unbeliebably BIG bug, since you (obviously) programmed the AI to focus on the player and this clearly shows the mechanics working in the background. Their sole purpose to bring all the AIs to declare war on the player.

Other rather obvious signs of human player harrasment:

Why are there ALWAYS animals waiting for my settlers ont the best tile
in the neighborhood?

Why are the Ais always vassaling to the leading AI and not the player (even if
you're leading)?

Why do I get NONSTOP barb attacks when I got a rather good start?

Other complaints:

Why is the AIs leaders attitudes suddenly missing?

How about some warning tag if you're about to trade with some AI that
could damage your attitude towars some other AI?

Sorry, but I just HAD to blow some steam after shelling out my dough for
this halfheartedly executed pile of cr*p.

Great game by the way nonetheless!

Quick patch please!

You sound like it happens often.
Trust me is it not.
If you check alexman post you'll see how much rare is this phenomen.

Which makes is very likely not to show in initial playtesting.

What happens when an Ai with vassals capitulates. Do his vassals become your vassal.
